Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Should I leave Ford for FCA

I’m a GSR8 with Ford for ~5 yrs, got an attractive promotional offer from FCA,?I know at Ford even if I wait 20 yrs it will be a miracle to get to LL6 , plus who knows if the gamble the 2 Js are playing is worth it or not... on the other hand FCA has its own issues.... should I make the move?

What a great company FCA is, the leadership team Mike and Mark are both accomplished professionals who know what they are doing, unlike Ford, where the 2 bozos have no clue what should their right next step should be. Welcome to FCA!

who moves from Ford to FCA?! I mean we're struggling but at least we're trying our best. FCA simply gave up a while ago.

I left the FCG program as a GSR6 in 2016 for a substantial raise (stayed in automotive but not on the OE side) and have never looked back. The only reason to hold on at this point is to hedge against the sheer uncertainty that is occurring in automotive right now due to COVID & the risk that your new role is eliminated either due to the virus or the merger. Delay the decision as late as possible in the process & attempt to ensure that FCA plans to keep the role- you have every right to ask (albeit in a strategic manner)

On the topic of leaving Ford for FCA- there was always something that seemed off about Ford's culture, so I don't see how FCA's issues could be any worse. You're looking at another 10+ years before you get your shot as an LL6- and with the number of incompetent, groupthinking Gen X'ers that are just getting into LL6 roles now- you'd be handcuffed to that for another 10 unless you are able to step on everyone on your way up.

As mentioned earlier, FCA is about to go through massive layoffs due to their upcoming merger. Historically, Chrysler/FCA has been a basket case when compared to Ford and GM. They’ll have some boom years followed by periods of extreme duress due to poor management and the fact that they’re always the little brother of the D3.

“who hires in as a 6 nowadays let alone a GSR5?”

People hired straight out of bachelors.

Thing to remember is that allot of LL5s & 6s have been Red Circled in the SRD. You wouldn’t know this because the person is still here. However, this is going to be an even bigger hurdle for future promotions. Take the money, and position and don’t look back.

In any profession, you need to continually build your resume through increasing responsibility. It’s the only way you’ll have control over yourself. The auto company’s are good at keeping there people locked in. The way around it, is doing what your suggesting. If you have fate in yourself, go for it. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll find your way. Take control of your own career, because no one else will.

Dont come to FCA ...It has become a shelter sanctuary for all GM, Ford guys coming in the last 5 years because of your own problems.......we have already over-hired enough H1Bs, temporary workers...plus we have a merger with planned reduction to come.....Auburn hills CTC is these days a big bloated organization...there are enough people in our group wandering the 4th floor swinging their hands, hips excersizing....save yourselves some misery for all of us later...

It’s not unheard of to get to GSR8 in 5 years, if you are a top performer.

How did you become a GSR8 after only being there 5 years?

Leave on good terms and you can always come back. There is no pension for you so nothing is holding you there other than good pay and benefits but I'd think you could find that elsewhere and perhaps in a better part of the country. As said above, Current Climate makes it difficult, keep working from home and making easy money.

I suggest getting out of Automotive entirely if you can.

I've been finding opportunity to move up very, very difficult. I was hired in as a GSR5, Five years ago, was told to complete my bachelor's degree to get a boost. While working on completing my degree I got to a GSR6. I completed my degree and they refuse to bump.me any further or move me to another position. I've been completed with my degree for 2.5 years, have taken on more responsibilities, but still they won't even consider bumping me again. When I found other positions and asked for permission to apply, I was denied and told they don't have someone to back fill. So I'm going to start looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Tough call. My gut instinct was that you should move but these are not ordinary times.

At the end of the day, only you know what is right for you, so trust your gut.

I would really think it through though due to the current climate we are in. With this virus and the unknown economic impact it will have, I would stay put for a while just in case companies decide to lay off and kick out the people with least seniority. Good luck - I’m in the same position as you. Getting to LL6 will be a miracle - that’s the downside to Ford - no advancement opportunities.
