Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Comparing other semiconductor fabs to Intel

Hi, I’ve been applying for jobs. I have a phone interview with another company on the east coast in a wafer-related position similar to here with what appears to be more innovation. If you have worked in fabs on the other side of the US, could you please share the work culture, work-life balance, and database management compared to Intel? I am more interested in research type work, so if it’s a lot of copying and reviewing charts like the fab I’m at, I’d like to pass on it. I am only considering since the lab-research position I could get into won’t get back to me for a while and is a short term position. I feel I‘ve heard enough about Samsung, Cree, and Lam-owned companies, so if you could steer away from those, it’d be great. Thx

I went from Intel to an east coast fab. There are quite a few that have made the jump at the site. Most like it, I hate it. More relaxed work environment, but very little innovation. I can't speak for other sites within the company directly, but from observation the company prioritizes growth via acquisitions, not internal development.

Go with your gut feeling about the people who interviewed you

Work culture / work life balance really depends on the department / manager you have.
Not dependent on company.

Only major Semi wafer company on East coast that I know of is Globalfoundries.
It's in New York a blue state or blue state laws apply. Important for Non-exempt jobs

If it happens to be GF, they abandoned Moore's law high tech development 2 yrs ago i think to focus on some niche areas

Being a private company owned by an oil rich sovereign fund, there are not much public statements around on how they are actually progressing though.

Stay the f–k away from Intel. We are a raging fire truck heading into an active volcano.

I wish I could share the company, but I definitely don’t want to risk that : ) It’s a large enough company with offices throughout the country that I’m guessing someone should know, though they claim that people stay there for a while, so it may be difficult...
