Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

HES Seems To Be the Place To Be For the First Time

HES Center has gone through some significant reductions in headcount each year over the last 5 years. The pain and suffering we all have gone through not knowing if we would have a job or not has taken its toll but it has put us in a position to all be ok on this downturn. I told my husband that the only reason I am not stressing is that our VP promised all of us a job if he got his job he would make sure we all got jobs. Well, you would have thought I won the lottery when he got announced as our VP. I celebrated with 8 other employees on zoom. It is great to work for people you can trust. This is a great company and an even greater function.

Read a few other threads; HES will be crushed in the upcoming layoffs; the OP was straight up lied to. HES will be re-imagined as a minimally staffed bare bones department. Estimates for layoffs in HES may approach 40 -50% in many BUs. The Axe man cometh and HES is on the chopping block.

He mentioned that he is taking back those statements he made last year given the unprecedented changes that have occurred in our current economic environment and can no longer guarantee that every single individual is HES is safe. Not surprising at all and you would be naive that they would not adjust as appropriate as the new organization is put in place.

DP is a man of his word. He said he would resign before he let any of us go. That is strong language and I trust him. He is truly a good leader and I am proud to be part of his team.

I think I smell a little jealousy here. If you were getting your joint smoked as much as DP you would be promoting all those babes too!

I agree that the OP is looking for a reaction. I also know the OP is correct as I was also in that meeting where DP made that promise. I think that the only thing you can count on is that DP will surround himself with women on his LT. DP has also stated many times that he has promoted more women that any other manager. He just doesn't promote men. The last two HES Managers for D&C have been women, the last six individuals promoted to an HES Manager slot across the world have been women since he became VP. I have been with the company for 8 years now and all of my female counterparts have been promoted at least once and some twice. My boss said it is just the direction of the function right now and to give it time. I was the top of my class in college and have performed very well on the PMP each year but my boss tells me that he cant promote everyone and the pull is for women to fill the HES slots. I am talking to my partner about jumping ship and heading back to California. The discrimination in this function is terrible.

This is a fake post . HES will hit as hard if not more so as other groups and the OP knows it. She wrote it simply to get a reaction from others.....

OP, ok thanks for the clarification. But as you can see from the posts within this tread, declaring that "HES is the place to be" was not clear to many as being limited to the OE HES Center. It may very well be that all HES within the center are safe. Good for you and the others. However, that does not do much for the large majority of HES who work outside of the center. So it may have been better to keep that jewel in private. Many are without such assurances.

Do not trust DP

DP is a reasonable guy? Please...
I worked with DP since our Unocal days.
I can assure you that the only people he is
going to save is himself and his daugher.
How vain and full of nepotism do you have to be
to get a poster of you and your daughter fishing
posted all over the building? Take a guess where his
daughter works? You got it. In D&C where he was VP.

This guy is full of it and you should never trust him.
He may have a hand out to you but it is only so he can
pull you closer to stab a knife in your back.

100% guaranteed that he lied to all of you.

3ahi,

I totally agree with you that DP is an incredibly reasonable guy. With that said, I was in the meeting where he clearly stated, As long as I am VP, all of you in this room have a job. When he said room, he was referring to all OE/HES Center employees and not the OE/HES employees at the BU level. For clarification, he restated his comment and everyone applauded and smiled. The reason he made that comment in my opinion is that the OE/HES Center has cut personnel with reorganizations (it seems like every 3 years since 2008).

Even the VP of HES, with all the clout and influence that the role has, does not afford him the power to control OC at the BU level. Lets take Upstream for example, the staffing decisions for headcount in each department, including HES are made ultimately by the BU VP, the LT and the managers of those individual departments. I find it very hard to envision a conversation where the VP of HES would verbally guarantee the jobs of every single HES person across the enterprise. It would be unenforceable and a huge over reach of authority. In the few conversations I have had with DP, he comes across as far too reasonable and intelligent to make such a statement. I feel it's quite obvious that he was misunderstood.

The fact that you rely on nepotism over performance to remain employed speaks volumes about your character and performance...or lack thereof!

Pretty sure he meant that each HES professional will have a job with Chevron, period. That may be an incorrect assumption, but that's what was made.

Pretty sure he meant HES as a function will still be relevant and have a place in the organization, not that each HES professional will have a job with Chevron. No one would make that promise...

He’s been VP of HES ever since D&I Queen took over as D&C VP a few years ago.

I don't know what the two posters below me are talking about but he got placed in the L2 announcement as the VP of HES that went out a couple of weeks ago. I was in the meeting where he guaranteed everyone a job. He came across as sincere and I think he truly meant it. You just don't say something like that unless you can back it up. At the VP level, one would think you can do whatever you want to do.

@hkt, He really said “As long as I am the VP”? Maybe he has already heard he will no longer be the VP or has decided to EOI and retire. Don’t you think he meant that in a roundabout way? Let me assure you, HES is just as much at risk of heavy layoffs as any other workgroup in any BU. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. That’s my advise for everyone.

I was there. He said as long as he was VP, we (HES) would all have a job. I trust him. Why would he say that if it was not true? I mean, he would have an entire organization that didn't trust anything he said if he did not keep his word. Right? Am i missing something here.

Keep drinking the Cool-Aid. Nobody is safe, and HES is not an exception. All those "Advisors", "SME's", "Superintendents" are and will be on the chopping block as well. There are HUGE redundancies across BU's and functions, which represent a very nice Opex savings objective to accomplish. HES, just as SCM have a target painted on their backs and they know it. Get real Buddy.
