Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Use this time wisely

I do believe UP Breeds underachievement. I was there for many years before I wisened up and left. I was nervous leaving an easy job but glad I did now. Same trade, different industry. It wasn’t easy to get in but I studied practiced my interview skills. I make a more money with more time off and better benefits. I haven’t had one of my new co-workers try to screw anyone else over or not pull their weight. Up until last month there were thousands of good employment opportunities out there. Everyone wanted to stay with UP under the aura that retirement is so great and it’s easy work. They are comfortable. If you get a job with decent 401k match you can out do the Railroad retirement. You may just have to work a little more and apply yourself. Now with the pandemic and drying up of jobs, they have you by the balls. Your chances of leaving are slim so you have to deal with taking unpaid leave or volunteer days off. Use this time to learn your trade and fine tune your skills. Take some on line learning classes and when the job market picks up you’ll be ready to go. It’s nice not worrying about your job situation.

To retired manager guy. First off, everyone knows UP isn't what it used to be. Look at what is happening to the company now. The gravy train you had is over. Even if you are a diehard UP guy that doesn't mean you will even make it to retirement.

The fact that retired manager guy doesn't know any other jobs that pay six figures or have good retirement besides UP management says something about him and is fairly typical. That's laughable. Perhaps you weren't qualified.

There is no more manager pension and I was an agreement employee. What good does it do to have a 401k if you aren’t using it in retirement?

As a retired manager I don’t know many jobs that pay 120k a year in retirement. That’s without touching my 401K. Don’t listen to the lightweights, s— it up and hang in there. You always go through cycles throughout your career. Take the good with the bad.

You’re right. No courage — completely brainwashed and paralyzed with fear to quit.

They get what they deserve.

And then they’ll just whine and cry.

Instead of maning up —- they blame the UP .

Or fabricate dozens of excuses.

If you to afraid to leave , then STFU and do what you are obligated to do !

The End

I know there are plenty who talk about quitting but won’t. I was one of them. Yes, there are some jobs available still but not as prevalent. The industry I moved to had easily 50 different companies with a wide range of positions. Now there are no jobs available.

they don't have anyone by the balls. you cant still find another job. sure you're competing against an extra 26 million people that just lost their jobs, but companies still have positions to fill. don't let this be another excuse added to the thousands people already have for not leaving UP. these guys always talk a big game about leaving but never do.
