This is like reading the tea leaves...very ambiguous. You'd best believe JG and company will accelerate the store closures and layoffs if need be.

There is the potential for more store closures in addition to those already planned. But that depends on how slow the recovery is and likely won’t be decided until next year. Most stores will reopen, but with reduced staffing in the earliest stages, which is what JG was referring.

What I took from JG's update today is the following...
Macy's will inevitably add many more stores to the closure list and fast track liquidation. The ones that will stick with their "original format" will eliminate as many positions as possible (as if we didn't already have a problem with staffing) like sales supervisors, sales leads, and limiting each department to 1 or 2 associates working at a time. As far as the "fulfillment format", I guess we still don't know what that will look like but I'd imagine it would be more or less reduced store hours, minimal sq ft and stock on the sales floor, and stockrooms filling up for shipping.
