Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Disgruntled employees stop blaming the union

Here’s the deal. Yes union has lost a lot of the responsibilities and membership is dropping however, the union is not going anywhere. What you seem to forget is linemen and craft are the lifeline of this company. Just look at who the essential 15k workers are and you will start to understand what really is going on here. Disgruntled management post that I keep reading bashing the union is obvious. I blame this on Verizon management and how they have been positioning to take away responsibility from craft only to find out that they are hurting themselves. The Company has created a bad environment this way. Instead of utilizing the workforce they already have they have created redundancy and multiple management jobs when the same associate could do that same work.

It all starts with employee moral and comradery. Stop treating these jobs as an assembly line manufacturing plant. VZ is supposed to be a technology company. Start acting that way across all organizations!! I agree union members need to be held accountable for their work. Let’s see some enticement, willingness to promote good workers, and train employees in technology if you truly do want to be a Google or Amazon one day !!

As a project manager I’ve never seen so much micromanaging in my life. This includes both management and union staff.

We cooked turkey today. It was delicious. Had some wine afterwards and ended up dancing in the living room.
Then I logged off “work” for the day
Pay me!

All I would say is don’t hate the player, hate the game. If you truly do want to succeed make it happen.

All of you management disgruntled baby’s - nothing is stopping you from achieving better positions and moving up just apply yourself and stop crying and worrying about the union.

And all you union flunk outs if you want to better yourself step up to the plate and do it.

The problem is for the small percent of union staff that does step up it hardly gets noticed because most of the managers the union reports to isn’t going to do squat or promote them. So there lies the dysfunctional culture of VZ

That’s why you have crying managers and flunk our union members... Glad I’m retiring soon

sorry.

$5 and change per day actually. Well worth it, when we were supposed to be eliminated in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2011.

But I think 2016 is the end of the line. Lowell McAdam will hold the line and eliminate the union with his last best and final offer.

2020 is the next Rif. 2023 is a long way off. Looking back at the past posts that predicted union outcomes they were all wrong. You should educate yourself.

We need unions to serve as a check and balance against management abusing their labor force.

Union born and bred but I will say the dues are outrageous and you don't have the same job benefits compared to back in the day. Also, the union leaders make alot of $ vs technicians. Which is a disgrace.

"Ever wonder why is it the union heavy states countries that are the best to live in?"

You mean the states with high taxes and insolvent pensions. You mean bankrupt countires like France and Greece? Those states and countries?

It's a good idea to dabble in the work you're representing in order to keep a sense of what is really going on. Otherwise, you risk existing within a bubble, without a true feel for what the life of the worker who you are representing is like.

Re: Membership dropping.

We've had people drop our union over the years, not because they don't respect and appreciate what the union has done (from a high level), but because the local people who hold positions are lazy and manipulate their time. They receive their Verizon hourly pay directly from the union funds. 3 union leaders being paid a union bargained Verizon weekly pay, is a minimum $4000 week coming out of the union budget. Some will work their daily hours and code it union work, then come into the office and start taking calls on OT only. This frustrates the reps as they have to actually do their job for their regular tour hours before earning OT.

When our center was much larger years ago, the people in those positions then, came in and did the associate job a few days a week, and were offline when needed for grievances. Now, our center has a handful of associates and all of the leaders need to be offline 5 days a week? What type of legitimite union work requires 3 people, 5 days a week, every week? People are tired of paying union dues that is only serving a purpose of paying for the locals to avoid doing the job their paid hourly wage says they should be doing. When I hear these same people each contract stating how greedy the company is, their behavior demonstrates they are no different.

I am glad you agree. The truth needs to be told. It's the culture. There was a good ole boys network with management. I have seen it first hand. Happens in all companies. Play the game better than anyone else.

I agree there are management slackers and scammers as well. I won't dispute that, but the conversation was specifically about the union. The union can get away with it more than a manager can. I watched peers who were in the good ole boys club get caught, fired, demoted, etc. Still didn't stop me from being true to myself, and remain an excellent manager.

I was in management, most other management that I worked with were worse offenders then the union. If it wasn't for the union they would have been laid off long before their time.

Everyone knows the VZ union job is the easiest job....a good portion of you lie, play sick, and slow down when you don't get your way. It's not a true union job where you are paid and get work based on your work ethics and morals. All of you get the same, and 25% of you do a p*ss poor job. If you have work ethics, you have work ethics, period. It's not based on on anything else. When I was in the union for 15 years, I hated when my peers wanted credit off my back. I worked hard, because that's how I was brought up, came from a low income family. I don't care that my peers wanted to goof off, cheat, and lie. I don't care that management couldn't stop it, but I always did a fair day's job and more because That's Who I Am. And when I really needed the union because of an unfair 5 day loss of pay during a REAL illness back in the 90's, the union didn't take much time to help me because that was the one and only time I needed them, I was an excellent employee, but they were too busy helping the loser techs that were always in trouble. Ever wonder why is it the union heavy states that are the most expensive and worst to live in? I always wonder what do these slackers tell their families and kids. Watch daddy cheat and lie to the company while I sit at home with you. I hope I raised you well and you grow up just like me, and don't every strive to be better or go for a management position in any company. Just stay the lowest level you can be. I pity your family you are raising. If all union employees acted and worked like I did, it would be different. You probably would have 50% less employees because you wouldn't need too many to do the same thing that few honest workers could do. So the union leaders enforce screwing up, so the company needs more employees, so the union gets more dues. $$$

Side note....so many on this board acting like juveniles told they can’t go to the party....let’s start acting like a team people...if one side succeeds we ALL DO!!
