Thread regarding Hertz layoffs

Why is European leadership silent?

Nothing from Angela Brav.
Nothing from the Country Leaders.
I am lucky because I have a great manager who keeps me informed.
But I want to hear from our leaders, because I know that our financial position is fully broken, and I know then are going to fire us all but they are too ashamed to communicate.

Given the EU (UK) Leaderships inability to do anything, it has to be Option 1.
It's the cheapest, and required least effort.

If they don't top up to compensate for the reduced government support then they will have to seek employee agreement (Option 2). Thats not good for them (see my earlier message to UK Furloughed employees).

Option 2 gives the employees some choice. But let me make a comment about the job market...
I agree that the job market is difficult right now, but anyone who has been sat on their hands for the last THREE MONTHS and has failed to prepare for the certain eventuality of losing their job at Hertz frankly needs to stay put and enjoy the ride. You have to help yourself.

Option 2 is also unlikely because it suggests some element of confidence on the part of the leadership - that there will be any kind of business in 2020. They have no idea.

Option 2 also requires they have the cash immediately available to make redundancy payments for the employees who do say 'no'. They don't have the money. I said this 3 months ago, and it's as true today as it was back then.

Recall my earlier post about the rules around the number of people being made redundant, and what that does to the consultation period length (on full wages, as they would have to be taken out of the scheme to be made redundant). So it's not just about a redundancy payment, it's about the consultation period, notice period payments, car, pension, healthcare and redundancy payments based on length of service (the company believes they have to pay out 2 weeks for every year worked). They don't have the cash for this.

If they have done their risk assessment they will avoid Option 2.

Option 3 is unlikely, given they don't have the money for Option 2. Nor do they have the visibility of what the business looks like 1, 3, 6, 12 months from now. Planning/Strategy? Don't make me laugh.

Option 4 (and I don't want to put ideas into their heads, but you could view this as a win-win for employees and employer)...

Option 4
Let's call it 'pre-planned redundancy, effective end Oct 2020'.

This gets around the issue of a consultation period, and it really only works when the concept is targeted at employees who they are reasonably confident will accept redundancy... using a well constructed compromise agreement.
Maybe a better term is voluntary redundancy, but with some people being made to volunteer?
Although my view is that when confronted with this offer, even the most unwilling SHOULD accept. If you get legal advice I believe your lawyer would tell you to take it! If I was in HR I would know exactly who to target...

Details as follows:
Employees would be required to enter into a compromise agreement with Hertz, whereby they could not disclose ANY details of the arrangement, otherwise they will forfeit their payment.
Win-win because...
Hertz would keep these employees in the government furlough until the end of October, costing Hertz nothing and they wouldn't even have to top up the government reduction (or they could, if they were being nice).
Hertz then avoids any consultation period (time and money), and then they just pay out what would have to have been paid anyway when government support ends.
It's a win for the employee, because they still get money until October (which they wouldn't get if they got dumped now), then they get the redundancy they would be getting anyway.
The only issue is if they get a job in the meantime, in which case the sensible thing would be to tell their new employer that they are in a notice period with Hertz - if they go immediately they lose everything, but then that what happens anyway in normal times.

My view is that the leadership lack the conviction or vision to take Option 4, because honestly they know that they are bankrupt, so why bother (that's the horrible truth).

They really can't afford anything apart from a topped up Option 1 right now, and then let the government pick up the redundancy bill when the ship finally sinks.

If Hertz was strong, and had confidence in the viability of the business post COVID-19, then they would be making strong decisions right now (Option 3 or 4). Because they would know that once they jettison the 40-60% of the workforce that matches the likely future demand, then they still have a great, profitable business. But they aren't strong, and Hertz is going to go into administration.

Option 1 is the weakest, easiest, cheapest and sadly yes, it means more non-action and full pay for the 'leadership'.

What else do you expect?

So AB has said that next weeks update will be dedicated to UK furloughed employees, anyone have any heads up on what they might do? I can only think of 3 possible scenarios:

1) Continue furlough until October, topping up the government changes. At which point it’s possible Hertz Europe might go into administration and we will only be entitled to statutory redundancy.

2) Change furlough terms as per government changes in hopes that everyone will accept like the first furlough. A few people might not accept and be made redundant. I reckon majority might still accept as it’s still 4 months of pay (albeit furlough pay) especially with the job market at the moment.

3) Make a portion of UK staff redundant and continue to furlough the remaining.

I think no. 3 gives them the most control of costs/cash flow however it does require a good level of planning/strategy. No. 2 is a g@mble, it’s possible everyone might continue to accept even with the changes in terms. No. 1 would be easiest as it allows the ILT a further 4 months of non-action, non-strategy whilst taking their full executive packets.

Any other options?

Does anyone know what options as employees on furlough we might expect in Ireland? I believe the labour law is different than in UK. In the previous post someone described interesting scenarios we might expect in UK. But I wonder what about HESC furloughed employees?

THIS IS IMPORTANT. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE NOT TELLING YOU. UK FURLOUGHED EMPLOYEES MUST READ THIS.

There is a really important subtext related to the UK Employee Protection Scheme (Furlough), and all furloughed UK employees need to think about this very carefully...

The government outlines the changes is here (read this at the very least!):
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme/changes-to-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme

The REALLY IMPORTANT consideration here is that this change, be it returning employees to work or amending the terms (not the duration) of the furlough, MUST BE AGREED WITH THE EMPLOYEE.

Simply extending and not amending the level of remuneration may not require agreement, but any reduction in salary or any requirement to return to work on a part or full time requires agreement, AND THIS COULD BE YOUR OPPORTUNITY.

Legal advice to employers here:
https://www.lewissilkin.com/en/insights/furloughing-employefaqs-for-employers-on-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme

"Employees can remain on full furlough until the scheme closes at the end of October – although you’ll need their agreement to remain on furlough for this period if you do not already have it."
They have this agreement already, but at the 80% support level (60% for higher paid employees). If they change this, then you need to agree again. They may play it safe and go for agreement to extend to October anyway, if so, great.

"What if an employee does not agree to a furlough extension?
If an employee does not agree to a furlough extension then you’ll need to consider your other options - see our Restructuring the workplace post Covid-19 - FAQs for employers for further details."

Now of course they may have anticipated this, and will have redundancy options prepared, but any redundancy over 20-99 employees requires a MINIMUM 30 day consultation period, over 100 people 45 days and the fact that they can't afford redundancies makes this unlikely. Also, making redundancies whilst enrolled in the Employee Protection Scheme has all sorts of complications that they are not intellectually/legally equipped to deal with.

I cannot guarantee that Hertz is going bust, and that you are definitely facing a payout in from the government because of bankruptcy (see below).
https://www.gov.uk/your-rights-if-your-employer-is-insolvent/what-you-can-get
BUT IT IS VERY LIKELY. WHY ELSE ARE THEY DOING NOTHING?

You can be sure that if they seek your agreement to either extend furlough on reduced salary or return to work, then this is definitely your opportunity to seek a proper redundancy settlement that will be better than the government minimum.

So think carefully, arm yourself with the facts, and then be ready as this may be your opportunity to take control of your future instead of waiting for the company to go bust. Talk with your families and dependants, but this time don't get mislead into accepting a furlough that leaves you worse off and a passenger on a train wreck.

Check if your home insurance includes legal cover, and get ready. Better to force redundancy now, that wait for very little later. Remember that now is not a great time to be looking for work.

Be prepared to say "no".

The call was uninspiring honestly I don’t trust AB or anything she says now...I think Covid has identified that we really did get the short straw in leadership and talent, and it goes beyond her the ILT is just uninspiring flat and boring..

But apparently even though revenue is -95% YOY we are all coming back from furlough????

Yet she’s got FTI Consultants in the business doing a Re Org plan for her on how to reduce costs so we are all coming back because they took the furlough money and then what?
if this was true why do you have consultants in doing Re Org plans??? This is the BS that annoys everyone how can everything be normal, she did say it was also not guaranteed the business would survive that’s more like it we stay on furlough until Sept so if the business goes under no redundancy pay, or she borrows some money or the best situation someone buys Hertz globally and fires all the ILT once they realise how shocking they are.

So basically it was another call laced with untruths..but it seems until Sept no one is being let go and they are also trying to borrow more money....and until then it’s WFH or stay on furlough..

Still no plan!

Here’s my theory why nothing is happening in Europe:
1) Bankruptcy avoided - Only reason is to save AB’s job. Most CEOs leave once bankruptcy is filed, with very little or no compensation.
2) No planned redundancies - ILT wants to preserve cash for themselves. Bet they are working behind the scenes now to secure their financial position.
In the meantime let’s milk all the government support. Nevermind that every other business is restructuring To preserve themselves. Europe ILT will celebrate green shoots, continue paying astronomical executive salaries for executives that do f-all (bovan?) and wait to see if our business will recover.
Better stop now, 10 minutes before AB’s business update! Can’t miss all the important news!

AB

Some Questions you can please answer on today’s call.

What’s Revenue for Q2 YOY and what have you forecast for Q3?

What does the restructure look like here in HESC and HEL what % of cuts are you going to make.

Your ILT is still 100% intact do you see this continuing given the climate.

How do you plan to resolve the employee issues that it’s clear you have, trust, integrity, belief your the right Captain as 85% of the employees spoken to said they have no confidence or trust in your abilities to lead, also your knowledge.

Knowledge a lot of your ILT including yourself have very limited knowledge this can be learned but you are slowly eliminating people who know, how does your team intend to learn titles do not alone give people confidence.

What’s your plans for WFH, I believe the subject of today’s call, but some people want to come back to the office we don’t all have Mews houses in Buckingham Palace to work from?

Pay and Salaries how will these be reviewed going forward, as the ILT and US exec were given more money because there work load has increased form many of us this is the same how will we be compensated.

What’s the bonus plan for 2020?

What are you doing to save Europe?

I’m sure others have questions so let’s have some answers we deserve something 4 months in.

Super Super another call with AB tomorrow seems as though it’s restricted to UK HQ..

Given the weather is amazing and you may not wish to waste you day or perhaps 10mins listening to love green shoots and togetherness it seems a little victory for the employees her enforced return to the office plan has been bleached, she will announce home working May continue for now..

Given it’s summer July August use the time well, remember the waiver is only until Sept and cash is running low...

She may say this was her glorious plan, but in fact she wanted you all back in mandatory return, thanks to the WC and others including Douglas for resisting the call.

Summer fun enjoy..

Optimistic Start with AB??

For me her start was as bad as what has emerged as her true leadership “hopeless”.

It’s always easy to enter a business and make statements about what’s not working, ridicule the previous leadership when you have no idea what you are dealing with and make crazy claims and statements about your ability to fix everything. Feb post Covid Brav’s first month leading alone remembering she was absent Dec and 50% Jan, was a complete disaster have a look at the filling she was millions behind 2019 on EBITDA, revenue was FLAT.. I remember her town-hall in March when she made bold statements about how she didn’t do FLAT true she’s done negative ever since..

Her performance in Phoenix was an embarrassment to anyone who was unfortunate enough to see it unfold, she took 4 weeks holiday between her joining and returning in Jan.

Optimistic I was not many could see through the bravado and extraordinary arrogance that just her presence alone would be enough to fix things.
She would just sit in her tower and critique others and then push them out if the numbers were missed that was how she saw her role still to this day she has not offered any direction or strategy, because she in incapable or even understanding how the business actually works let alone defining a way forward, and she was obsessed with the carpets and ceiling tiles and wanted to claim the mini campaign as her own, she needed to because her marketing capability’s are zero.

Her financial capability also (lacking) was acknowledged within days, she made derogatory and racial comments towards employees within weeks, she siloed a leadership team divide and conquer apparently, she desperately attempted to cut all ties with the US, simply as she was afraid they would notice how incompetent she was. She’s bullied and abused her team, she has a new ILT which she has neither supported or attempted to help run the business instead she told them she would replace them with talented people as they were all useless..the list goes on and on.

She was already rubbish when she arrived someone had retrieved her from the trash and been fooled by her confident statements but failed to look under the engine, she apparently was a successful consultant yet her company was never registered in the US, and no tax was ever filled, she claimed on her second day she was launching a drink on Amazon that slowed down the ageing process and she had many other business which she owned or was involved in and she had to balance her Hertz job with these other business interests, again she’s not registered as a director of any US company, she brought her husband whom is actually the 2nd and it appears she is also divorced from if you check US records, to her town hall another lie.. Ex Husband the 2nd?

Also on a recent Webex she brought some apparent celeb to the call whom was in her house and breached confidentiality guidelines about the bankruptcy discussing it in front of him..trying to obtain some street cred for hanging out with a washed up nobody.. news no one cared who he was? And then you gave your team NDA’s seriously to conceal that you have hired even more consultants wait! It was Douglas to do the the Re Org, FTI instead of McKinsey anyone because you have to give the board something?

Spending more money to cover up your inability to strategically prepare even a few board slides, anyone can hire consultants this does not make them a leader it just shows that we are desperately trying to hold on to something we have no ability to manage, you know it and your team knows it and in fact 6000 employees now know it after the last call.

Has all governance gone from Hertz?

It appears yes!

And then she complains about people leaking info double standards when you have non employees on a business Webex so who’s leaking, and how many other external people have you discussed Hertz with AB?

And why are you meeting with Michel????

Maybe it was inevitable due to Covid but she’s compounded our fate and should be credited as the worst leader many people have ever had the unique experience to work for.

What’s a bigger issue to be considered is who and what is protecting her, because she’s apparently meeting the board regularly as she stated, not sure what happened in her latest attempt to me made CEO and not report to Paul, but by all accounts she is reporting to a senior board who are apparently experienced executives whom should be held accountable for the current state Hertz is in.

But no one can see the engine is rusted and way too low powered to drive the performance required, is that because they already know where this is headed and frankly are just letting it unfold painfully and slowly while still taking there pay checks, because if they believed in hope she would under no circumstances still be driving the train.

Infact it would never have left the station with her in that seat..

Another week, and nothing new.

Whilst it's now abundantly clear that furloughed UK employees are passengers on the longest ever train crash, it is sad that Angela Brav is unable to 'lead' through this difficult time.

After an optimistic start to her Hertz career, she has relegated herself to the Hertz dustbin of leadership - and it needs emptying.

Certain aspects of (UK) HR protocol prevent her from communicating what needs to be said. To be clear - the next thing she has to say is 'you're at risk of redundancy', and that can't be said until the time is correct. Sad to say, but it really is a simple as that.

Still, it would be nice if she was at honest when she paints the big picture.

It's maddening that the Nerve Centre / ILT / fully-paid wasters have been so woeful in their handing of this crisis. How ironic her words in Feb/March that this was outside of everyones experience. Therefore the true test leadership in this situation is how you manage the unknown, and our leaders have failed. What does Nayan Peshwar do again?

Do you know that they are working to some idealistic notion that they should plan BEYOND the next 12 MONTHS? So far I've called this pretty well, and I suggest that they will be lucky to see in the new year. I give Hertz 6 months tops. Whatever survives beyond January will be a shadow of its former self.

Get rid of the fat cats, and if you truly think that Hertz is going to survive beyond Christmas then start by taking a good look at the Thrifty UK structure - that includes the number and cost of senior 'leadership'. Hertz isn't a market leader any more, and Hertz cannot afford the number of 'execs' and their salary expectations.

If they are that good then they will have no problem finding a new job, so you don't even need to feel guilty about giving them the boot.

On a country level (I can only talk with authority about the UK), how much worse can the UK leadership get (MW excepted)? Through a combination of inaction and ineptitude they are managing to lose even more money! I think we are at the point where the UK Directors need to go - B'well (and cronies), S'dee, J'son, Spawn of Baven - your time is up.

What a sad state of affairs.

Reading all the stuff that’s going on in the US, cuts people being let go etc.

But yet here we still are in Europe with a leader who has no strategy, no plan and is completely incompetent not to mention a bully and rude, she’s never had anything good to say about anyone in Hertz and makes continuous remarks about how bad the company is, yet she’s still here taking her pay..even though her claim to fame is she’s rich and does not need the money...seems Bloomberg does not agree with that statement, oh and also she’s busy running her own companies still in Hertz time..If anyone believe that???

Breaking News

AB is seeking feedback on the Monday disaster call, HR is asking people what they thought.

Why do HR need to ask if they attended the call they should be able to articulate to AB that it was a total load of c-ap, she is like talking Barbie, false and clearly lacking the necessary leadership skills to run a company of any size..let alone a complicated and complex business that’s in a crisis.

Look at the U.K. fleet mess how does that even happen??

It’s to late now to fix the perception and seriously HR, stop making it look like your shocked that people think this, when you are either totally dumb which I don’t think or your just playing stupid games..The meeting s—ed, the company is lost the ILT is becoming a joke and the main reason is Barbie..
What more opinions do you need to confirm what you already can see staring you in the face..
Integrity is not just a Hertz value but it’s a genuine requirement in any business, if HR don’t have Integrity then what’s the point, stop pretending everything is ok and your trying to answer the questions.
Acknowledge and deal with the problem, and it’s not the 6000 people who attended the call, where the problem lies it’s the driver.. You know it and we know it and trying to wrap it in shinny paper is not working..We also know that she said on receipt of the feedback.

I don’t give a F what people think of me!!
so I rest my case your playing BS games and looking for non believers start with finding a fan, good luck..

This Thread should be renamed.

Why is Angela Brav still here, the good thing about yesterday is that anyone who was not aware how incompetent she was, perhaps had read this thread heard some rumours but maybe thought it was exaggerated how could a President not have leadership skills!

The good thing about yesterday was now all 6000 employees know (are in shock) but at least aware that we are being lead to our deaths, dramatic? But everything I heard about AB was compounded yesterday into reality I mean actually WTF was that.

Someone needs to give her the feedback she can’t present, she comes over as false, reading from a script is wild given she has had months of the crisis surely she could talk from the heart, and please stop with the fake empathy it’s honestly disgusting, you care really your false and no one is buying your BS.

For the first time in 102 years I am sincerely worried for Hertz if your directing, a full scale crash is inevitable...

Also many people want to write on here but are afraid so don’t be fooled that this is only a minority, it’s what 99% of your audience saw and thinks, the 1% is what ever id–t wrote your script and told you good to go, Comms I guess also should be ashamed is this really it..

Enough ranting I have 6 cars going out today in JUNE??

That’s how we know your lying, we see the reality???

January 8th, Phoenix, Arizona, International breakfast at the Hertz Leadership Conference.
Brav is wearing oversized shoulder pads and starts talking.
At least she doesn't tremble like her disaster, no content speech in the plenary sessions earlier in the week.
Best part (paraphrased): "I don't work for the money. I am not saying that to brag, but for you to understand why I joined Hertz." She was later spotted rolling on the floor from laughter.
If you are not here for the money, just leave and stop ruining this gig for the ones that really need the money.
You talked like it is February and corona is about to hit. We are in mid June, Madam. 11 weeks of your nerve centre and you got nothing. Empty promises about some plan or strategy, as good a lie as your "I don't work for the money."
Your confidence is fake. Nothing good is happening to us. Easter is gone, summer peak is not coming. People are so desperate, they are getting excited about daily rentals for a full country that would normally be the volume of any top station in half a day.
"Iconic" isn't enough to survive. 102 years is no guarantee for anything.
When will you start being honest and transparent? When do you plan on telling us that not all of us will have jobs? You will earn more praise and respect by telling us the hard facts instead of this farce and fairytale that somehow all locations and all employees survive.
Leadership: where we are, where we are going, how you are going to take us there. We have a good grasp of where we are (rock bottom and clueless), but it is your job to do the following two pieces. Step up or step aside!

Agree with the below don’t be expecting anything from AB, and if she says your all coming back soon it’s a lie.

She tried to bring in McKinsey to do the re Org because no one in the current leadership team has a clue what the business does it’s difficult to design and Org, US denied spend on McKinsey so basically she’s now in a flap your all still on furlough simply because she can’t even build an Org Chart, so god help everyone because now it will be names in the hat.

The truth is AB has no idea how to run a business, she’s had to give all her team NDA agreements because she can’t trust them not to leak info on to here or other places, that’s enough to tell you she has no team they have no ideas and honestly whatever she’s going to say Monday is simply because Comms is telling her she has to say something.

Will be read from a script will be false and won’t be relevant because as of this morning she’s still no plan. Trust me no plan for the rest of this year and nothing going forward, we are basically still alive through luck and the fact they could sell some cars...she’s not going to tell the truth, because that would mean telling you she has no clue, she’s silenced her team so she’s the only voice and your basically on the Titanic with a captain that has no ability to drive it..be afraid.

How can they plan redundancies without a payout?

by
| | Reply
Post ID: @Dfcq+14PvfaDW

Here’s what she probably won’t be saying on Monday...

European revenue is not improving, nor does it look likely to improve this year.

As predicted earlier in this thread, the world is not emerging from COVID-19 with a bang - the global economy is in crisis, and travel is severely restricted.

In corporate, companies getting to grips with the New Normal and rebuilding their balance sheets. They will slash discretionary spend - travel budgets - are a now used to a new way of working.
For consumers, no one is rushing out and grabbing a summer holiday bargain and renting a car.

Most of the business we have right now is long term.

Don’t believe it if she tells you otherwise - the numbers do not lie. Instead we see certain countries renting out vehicles on crazy terms.

Hertz Europe is running short of money (maybe Angela Brav and her team are going to take a pay cut now?).

Such is the cluelessness of the Nerve Centre that having started to plan redundancies (in the UK), the latest instruction is that there is now to be no payouts as there is no money.

Again, this was clearly stated in this thread some time ago.

The one-time opportunity to generate cash - returning buybacks - will genuinely generate the cash, but this is is a one-off, and the money is almost certainly going to be ring-fenced for Hertz Global.

And then what happens when the demand starts to come back? We have no cars, nor the means to buy any more.

Furloughed (trapped) employees in the U.K. are being extended for as long as the government keeps throwing out the lifeline. To the end of July. What happens after that, Angela?

So what’s the plan, Angela?

The leadership team, so good a giving out relentless beatings to functional leads for the last few years has no idea what to do.

They were great when it came to taking away bonuses, bickering over the concept of flexible working, recruiting and promoting ineffectual and unqualified leaders, creating an oppressive culture and ignoring the voice of the employees.

Just tell the truth.

AB will probably talk about what happened yesterday in US. She cancelled Friday call because she had to, waiting for the news to come. Of course somebody told her to cancel it...

What will AB she talk about???

HER that’s it since she arrived, it’s been months now I’m actually astounded how diabolical she’s been? I only saw this site last week and unfortunately I agree with 99% of the comments about her leadership it’s poor, if she does the lonely BS again I’m hanging up..given she’s already cancelled it once I’m not holding out for anything inspirational..

Anybody know what AB will be speaking about on Monday? I’m in two minds to attend or not, there’s many other things to spend my time on productively.

First you have to have a strategy then you communicate the strategy. They don’t have a strategy. Stop expecting this crew of misfits to come up with anything strategic. Virtually impossible.

Bet she’s going to say everything is hunky dory, market is picking up etc etc etc. And how she misses all of us, I want my “people” back.
Tell us the truth Angela. Will we still have jobs? Markets are reopening but everyone is still on furlough until end of July. Doesn’t take a genius to figure things out. We have bills to pay and no executive salary to fall back on.
I’ve submitted my question, let’s see if it gets picked. She did promise a Q&A session.

I wonder what AB will tell us tomorrow via Webex.
Missing all of us? Coffee machine broken?
Find a new job?

Got it Plan Brav

Find who’s writing in here top priority!

Find who’s leaking info so people can write on here, Major Alert Status for team Nerve!

Have HR focus energy on here instead of helping the employees who are concerned about the future, perhaps some nice calls just to see how we all are maybe just a suggestion..?!

I’m fact maybe we could all have a virtual drink meet up and just see how everyone is doing, lots of suggestions of how we could stay engaged.

But instead this is our sole communication channel created because it’s the only info we get..

Simple??

So stop complaining no one is listening🔇
