Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Getting laid off

I worked at JLS for 5 years and got laid off last May. I took the job working on the tracks and now I'm finding myself along with others that are going to be furloughed once again this coming week. The big bosses came to the gangs saying were going to keep us working and how there excited about the the new equipment they spent 7 millon on, yet a day later there shuting a gang down.

Who gives a fart.Once the govt. takes over the retirement pension there won't anything else to discuss. The railroad is now just a half a– job so let's not kid ourselves. Sad to see , Good news trucking industry is having it hay day because of the dismantling of the class 1 railroads. At the end of the day the mexicans, Bosnian,Russians, and fat chicks will be taking over transportation jobs.

Maybe you should be grateful for working this long! There were a lot of people furloughed after May that were there longer then 5 years and didn't have the option to go to the tracks!

Interesting read to play of the comment about the headquarters. Interpret it how you want, but to me it sounds like NS is trying to get all these free grants and incentives on a new building knowing they can’t afford it after the freebies dry up. And this is just what was released, I’m sure there is much more questionable things happening behind closed doors...... just another confirmation of my opinion that Jim Squires is trying to boost that stock high for him and his select top shareholders before retiring and selling out. Then the company will fall apart when all the unsustainable cost cuts catch up with them.

You're still luckier than me. I got laid off there in September and they did not hire a single one of us from that MOW hiring session. At least you will still get called back to the tracks before the rest of us ever get back to the shop.

The new NSC motto should be “Get the work done at the cheapest possible cost—enrich the stockholders & mgmt—and never put off until tomorrow what can be postponed indefinitely”

They love to spend a bunch of money to improve, expand or construct something and shortly afterwards close or shut the operation down. Moorman yard at Bellevue is supposedly about to close down the hump that they spent $160 million on a few years ago to double the capacity. They’ll get their new $500 million headquarters built in Atlanta and then six months later board it up except the first floor lol.

That’s the railroad way. Shouldn’t be surprised. Take it as a lesson learned. Never trust anything a railroad does bottom line
