Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Any reported layoffs or forced retirement of full time employees?

Obviously, things are bleak for contractors (if any remain at this point), but has anyone heard anything about full time employees being furloughed/laid off/forced to retire early?

New hires in NSI are out the door.

Less than five years in NSI are PIP.

Same metrics are being used again. Overhead in Houston is being aggressively cut. Expect more firings in Houston. As to those hoping for a severance package dream on. You work for ExxonMobil. They don’t do severance. They do what they can legally get away with.

Responding to “TooManyPeople” - “EM has not culled the low performers since the merger”? False. Previously known as MLRP, now known as NSI. It used to be much more secretive is all.

I started to see private blocked meetings in many of my org's managers/sups ... I suspect this must be ranking related or even a reorg. So stressful. I will keep digging.

Are we following the May 2020 game plan for 2021 and 2022 as posted by "Too many people"

Layoff: 10% in 2020 10% in 2021 and 5% in 2022 and 3% to 5% every year thereafter.

It’s just walking papers at this point. 8% is the number set to be cut.

If anyone knows the answer as to whether or not they're offering anything other than walking papers, I wish they'd let the rest of us in on it. Really tired of worrying about it. One would hope that the employees 1-3 years from retirement would get some kind of enhanced severance.

With Mobil, they had a standard severance pay of two weeks for every year. is this being offered?
How are the early retirement packages ?
Thanks,

Even the downstream sites has to make significant employee headcount cuts so it wont just be Upstream/HQ cuts...over 100+ cuts at each of the Big "B" sites...beaumont, baton rouge, baytown

Too many Drillers. Drilling Supt and Techs and Drilling procurement and subsurface/frac employees. Probably over 1000 people...which needs to be cut in half (or more). Same with IT...approaching 4000? There are only 1000 geologists and 300 reservoir engineers...What do we do with so many IT? Time to cut the OVERHEAD GROUPS dramatically. In the old days (pre-merger) we used to measure Direct field costs vs COST ABOVE FIELD. We dramatically cut the OVERHEAD when we stated measuring and counting these OVERHEAD costs. TIME TO MEASURE COST AND PRODUCTIVITY of the overhead.

Back to Basics

Layoff: 10% in 2020 10% in 2021 and 5% in 2022 and 3% to 5% every year thereafter. In 1986, we cut 30% in one year, then routinely fired the bottom 3 to 5% EVERY YEAR for the next 10 years. XOM has not culled the bottom performers since the merger. At Merger, Mobil cut nearly 25% before the merge date. At merger, ExxonMobil combined had 120k employees in 1999. We were down to 80k by 2005 with continuing reductions and asset sales. Note Exxon and Mobil combined had over 300k employees in 1982. This massive headcount was reduced by selling coal mines, copper mines, retail sites, refinery sales, US production, Reliance electric ., Montgomery wards etc. Also XOM dropped below 70k employees in 2015 and grew back up to 75k while production and refining volumes dropped. NEED 6 k cuts this year.

I suspect that they will also kick some old timers to the curb.

@3wji+14VyytIQ New ranking system will be used to weed out new and most likely all employeess that are low performing and/or don’t fit the model.

No, not true. Same process as normal for new hires. Doesn't mean they can't be let go though

Is it true first timers are being ranked?I thought this new ranking system they are rolling out exempted them an extra year?

Nothing concrete, but new joiners to the company who are normally exempt from the ranking process for a year or two will now be ranked this cycle. The company may be doing this to give themselves the flexibility to let the low performing portion of those new joiners go for cause in the not too distant future.
