Will young careers/Horizons be let go?

What's going to happen to people that just started or have less than 2 years experience with the company? For some it will be their 1st time going through a downturn

If you are a new hire and not a t–d you will be fine. I've known several t–ds that have survived. I call them floaters. They will survive this as well. In all seriousness, you will probably be alright unless you are a problem creator vs do nothing.

If you are a young white male, jump ship as fast as you can and take the money. White males will be struggling to get ahead for the next 20 years in Chevron with the metrics Wirth has put in place. I am not in HES but you can see the unhappiness in that function based on the posting on this page.

The great crew change won’t happen because the people who can retire, won’t retire. Life is to easy for them. Grade 25/26/27, Management level. Fully vested. $1-$2 million pension waiting for them and they are still pulling down $2-$300k a year and doing no work. Why would they retire? Result - career stagnation for the rest of us. Take a look around the BU’s. There is no upward mobility left. You’d have to be out of your mind to enter this industry right out of college. And if you are just getting in you really need to think about the possibility of a layoff mid/late career. It will be devastating.

I feel sorry for the generation that grew up thinking “everyone gets a trophy”. These times are a rude awakening.

Unfortunately this industry overhired because of the “great crew change” hype that never happened. It was unfair to the hordes of BS degreed engineers that were hired straight out of school.

Trolls aside. OG Ex-Horizons here, been through 5 rounds in my career. Most of the time as a younger employee whos a relatively good performer at a low psg your risk lowers. Ageism comes into play a lot in these cycles unfortunately and you are seen as better bang for buck.

Funny how sobering downturns are. I see young kids come in all the time with the attitude “I’m special”, “this isn’t interesting or rewarding enough to spend my time on”, “why do I have to do all the dog work steps”, and anyway “I am just too busy on the hairless, short-men, diversity appreciation council”. Then the first time in a downturn ...holy sh–... you mean I need to explain my value in terms of the bottom line? What do you mean “what specifically can I contribute to the project in the next 3 months?”: is this a trick question? Good luck everyone, this one looks to be a deep one!

Last downturn less than one year employees were protected, but after that it was open season. Mid career folks might have some connections to move to different Teams or BUs if they have a reputation for being great at what they do, but many (most) will find themselves in a local musical chairs...ten people, six chairs, and the music will stop soon enough. There will be an effort to span the grades, so if you are a star at your level, no worry. If you are on an asset with lots of chairs (important project), not much worry. If you are on a backwater project, lack any obvious “special” skills and your boss either dislikes you or is already shinning his gulf clubs...ya you should worry! There were several horizons level folk let go from my extended team last round.

It depends. In my 30 years experience and having gone through many downsizings, resizings, reorgs, ROMs, layoffs, etc, I haven’t seen many young employees with less than 2 years on the job get touched by the axe. If you’re a good employee, and by that I mean not a troublemaker or noticeable slacker, you have nothing much to worry about. The company is in constant need of new blood and the salaries and overhead for the newly hired are relatively low. So I wouldn’t be overly concerned about losing my job if I were you. But, nothing is ever guaranteed in life or at Chevron. Stay productive and don’t step on the wrong toes.
