Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Nepotism

We know there is nepotism within the company but why not consider laying off married couples (husband or wife)? We know there are a lot within the company, some within each group segment and some even in the same building. At least this way one spouse would still have a job and the company could save a struggling young person or a hardworking person or an experienced person. But i guess when you have incompetence in HR or other high level area, one could not expect a fair intelligent decision.

Thats silly...Now, if someone gets terminated because you have a same gender partner or simply because they want 'single' people than yes that would be discrimination. Obviously they would not state the reason for lay off is because your spouse or relative works there also but simply looking at numbers based on RIF's.
The problem here is the people or managers that allow these people to create a nepotism environment are the ones who benefit and they protect those people.

Discrimination based on marital status is illegal under the Civil Rights Act of 1964
