Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Who in their right mind would voluntarily leave for another job during this pandemic?

There must be something in the water at Armonk. Who in their right mind would voluntarily leave for another job during this pandemic? Especially since many tech organizations have put a hold on hiring at this time.

Aside from the fact that many of these current IBMers should have left long ago; this company is slowly restructuring itself to be smaller and more profitable (we'll see). That means people in low margin areas (like services) have a target on their head.

A target that existed well before the pandemic. I'm a former IBMer and I can tell you work, work-life balance is far superior on the outside. I hope for those about to be released that you find meaningful work soon.

You all deserve better.

Or perhaps all these are all made up rumors by bored people working at home with nothing better to do than troll this site.

So if the 40% is true (again all rumor so far) then we can do the math. 50k of GTS is going to be affected, and 20k of USA and European folks are going to be affected. This is just GTS. Now what happens to GBS??? Perhaps another 20k

@1rtf I heard from a reputable source that the GTS lay-off will impact 40% of the global workforce. My source said that 40% will be US and Europe staff.

How do you know it's moving forward? Are you in management? Or is it a hunch?

Ok. So. When?

The resource action that was initiated a few months ago in the US (selection phase) and then postponed, is moving forward now. I have no idea of the number of people who will be let go (they are very hush-hush about that).

If past behavior is prologue at IBM then the time for T2R has passed. This statement assumes that IBM is going to RA in MAY. I could easily be wrong, but IBM has always offered T2R before an RA as their incentive. I believe this one is going to be different as IBM wants to change their trajectory (strategy wise). They fed that info into their HR machine, and the computer kicked out the names given the new strategy as to who will be impacted. YEP if you are older(higher burden)/viewed as non-strategic/are able to retire/or in general just cost more than your peers, the computer most likely picked you. I hope I’m wrong, but IBM and AK have been signaling the street that something big is coming, and I believe it’s here. Good luck to all

I am waiting to see how many of my IBM friends who have been there are 35+ years decide to retire after all this. Some I talk to are saying "you only live once, and if I can do it I am leaving."

if IBM was to offer a package a I believe good number of people would seriously consider it. But it would have to be a really good package and I don't see IBM doing that. I think IBM is more likely to offer another T2R and this time open it up to more divisions than they did the last time.

I know two who did it. Neither from IBM, nor to IBM, but people do come and go.

Thanks OP - What was your last role when you were at IBM and what are you doing currently?
Are you in the United States?
IS your current company hiring?

There are some who are looking to retire and would volunteer if some sort of little package were offered.
