Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How to survive here as a contractor?

I was recently moved from network engineer role to a Developer, the couple of full timers in the team don’t know or don’t wanna share much, they say go learn by yourself, how can I learn in house projects without much guidance? Of course there are other contractors - vendor, third party and Indian companies - all of whom have severe job insecurity - they help with work but don’t tell how they did. Worst part nobody maintains documentation. I am trying but unable to give my best. How can one thrive in this toxic workplace?

@axsm+14aru30M are you kidding me? You've never seen a good employee lose their job? You MUST be living under a rock. RIFs of GOOD employees happen all the time. And we lost HUNDREDS of awesome IT people when they refused to be rebadged to Infosys. Now our IT systems are all in shambles.

because they are small weak minded people. They feel like if they share information with you that they will somehow be out of a job. I've never seen a good employee lose their job, Verizon will put you in a different role if you don't s—

Maybe the question you should find the answer to is why would the old timers want to share with you? We work in a global marketplace now so you are competition to them for future work. Why would they want to help you when they may be competing against you for work at some point? Who cares what V wants they’re pretty clear with how they feel about them, and you. That’s IT in the global economy, awesome.

The Full Timers are probably afraid they might be training a potential replacement. What you need to do is "go through the back door" and look to another Developer who is a contractor and learn from them and the the contractors. Do an search in the org charts and track them down! Best of luck to you

Use the code Luke! Seriously though 1) Ask questions verbally and often. Detailed questions. Be polite but persistent. At some point it becomes easier to answer the questions rather than have web surfing interrupted continuously!! 2) Guess/make assumptions where possible and just do it! 3) When you get truly stuck and no one is helping, I'd put the questions in an email. If no response, follow up in 2-3 days. After a few more days, you could follow up again with "When do you think you might be able to respond? As it stands I can't proceed with ..." and CC a manager. The case you want to build is that you are ready, willing, & pro-active to do the job you've been contracted for, but employees are the roadblock.

Ask Shanks about the caste system within VZ. If you are lower caste your paycheck kickbacks will be higher.
