I got news for all of you bashing the union workers. Yes they get paid very well and yes some are lazy. The problem is not the workers, the problem is the way Verizon is managing them. 1st level managers treat these positions with assembly line mentality. They have created this problem by taking away all the responsibilities but leaving the union workers with the very basic “essential” tasks. So if a circuit goes down who’s going to handle it.

VZ is currently trying to move towards a multi task responsibility workforce. The problem getting there is clueless director and below management not able to implement it. I guarantee you after this virus fades you will see major Big 5 consulting’s firms cleaning house of all the useless 1st level management personnel. They did it after 9/11. Already KPMG is talking about this topic on how unions will evolve more in this landscape. Country is taking a different direction. Globalization is finished. America First! Union Strong!

Omig why are you guys bashing union workers? Seriously, I took the VSP in 2016 and I’m proud to have been employed for VZ for 30 years both as management and union. For those of you working at home with your remote access using an RSA token, I was the administrator of it. Also was the lead FAAS firewall engineer. I started my career driving a truck. Two bachelor degrees, a masters, and CCIE certification.

Do not bash our hard working union workers!! Most of you desk workers are not needed workers that will prob be laid off if your not top notch quality or have a unique and desirable skill set. Union guys are dealing with the front line right now!! You all should be kidding their asses !!!!

Well, for all intents and purposes, if you had a brain, you wouldn’t be working for VZ.

You really walked into that one.

Now doctor, carry on with your: do as I say, not as I do/...for me, but not for thee... armchair quarterbacking, easily done from the safety and protective bubble of your home.

in the contract? huh? where in the contract does it specifically say to be forced to work without the necessary ppe in the middle of a generational deadly pandemic? this is not clean up after a storm or hurricane by the way

Its in your contract to get out there and face the public. Verizon is holding up their end of the contract. Now hold up yours. Do we need to find a steward to drag you out?

As for me, I have no union and no contract so I get to work from home in my underwear.

@5ii Even better: get off Facebook and Twitter to go do your job out in public, where people can cough all over you, away from safety and shelter, where you can no longer cower and work from your home.

Then before you know it, there is nothing on here but poor me wah wah stories or brags stories about how great my benefits are. This site is called The Layoff not The Union Coddler.

Everyone has options. The company should not make it for us. If you think things are unsafe, they are, agreed. However, to complain about the company that pays us, and compensates generously is ridiculous, again, we have options, to work here or not. To complain or not, or ramp out. Think about it. Also, to complain about the Unions is equally ridiculous. Though I’m not a member, I respect the work they do, and praise them for having the patience to deal with folks that are either complacent, ungrateful, or unwilling to step in. Stay safe my friends.

“Instead of working with VZ to find a solution, just sit there and let the customer suffer”

Please tell us what the solution is, as you work from the safety of your home.

VZ is not interested in a solution. They are reactive, not proactive. Nor do they really care about their customers.

You must be new to the company.

For those complaining about the union, You are the union! If you think you can do a better job, then by all means do it! For all the years I was a steward I can tell you it's a thankless job. Everyone complains but when asked to take a role in it, they turn and run.

I see there are a lot of anti union responses here. As if the union employees that are customer facing are somehow less educated, on paper anyway, than those in management positions. Having spent over 30 years at Verizon from the days of "Ma bell' I can tell you many union employees have at least one undergrad degree and I would say 1 in 5 have a Masters. Now for some context. The undergrad is nothing but the new high school diploma and many who posses such paper are likely working in an unrelated field. Take Starbucks for instance; that barista serving you likely has a liberal arts degree.

During the mid nineties, Nynex relaxed the requirement of a degree for managerial positions in hopes of enticing craft workers to take these field facing positions managing personnel in extraordinarily unique jobs. They destroyed the entire vetting process and ended up a large number of unqualified people. Why? That is for another post.
Moving forward, the result was nepotism over qualified people who actually knew the job. When I left, we had 3 foreman with a high school education, a 2nd liner working on a degree (10 yr pgm I guess) and another area had a VP who proudly stated in an interview with a magazine that a degree was a goal of hers somewhere down the line. A VP! lol When I left, the engineering department had no one with an engineering degree working in it. IT depts across the company were transitioning to all HB1 visa's.
So, it is obvious those posting the anti union rhetoric are completely ignorant to the history of the company because they're still wet behind the ears. But of course it won't stop them from shooting off their mouth. lol

A wise man once said, " It is better to remain quiet and appear stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt". lol

Walk out then. Or better yet, quit and find a better job. Or even better, go back to school and get a degree so you too may have a job that does not face the public.

I hear a lot of talk about a walkout.
I think it would be the wake up call Verizon needs. Stop asking your people to risk themselves to migrate a line.
When managers are forced to do this, suddenly it will be real, right?
Going to find out soon.

Hearing that companies are being hacked at unprecedented rates because of home computers being used for work. A whole new industry for hacking just opened up.
But... What company is asking people to use their personal computers, and what employee would do so?
By now everyone realizes better, right?😂

Yeah, that’s it: just wash your hands. it’s just that simple. Thank you for your expert medical advice. The pandemic must be over. And let’s just end the self-quarantine all over the country while we’re at it.

So easy to say that working from the safety and comfort of your own home and a token visit to the supermarket and doctors office.

And what this has to do with being a teacher and/or working at Amazon is totally irrelevant.

This is Verizon, not a school teacher’s job or an Amazon fulfillment center.

And stop telling people to go work somewhere else. Perhaps you should, as you seem to be very opinionated and intolerant of other’s vert relevant concerns.

Wash your hands. Total non sequitur replies to the original post.

Carry on and be safe everyone. To you and your families.

Teachers buy a lot of their own supplies....nothing is stopping you from getting something on your own if you're not happy what they are supplying you with. Wear gloves if you want, wash your hands, don't touch your face, before and after each customer interaction. Wipe down your vehicles and tools. Nothing different than what we all are doing on our own after going to necessary supermarket, or doctor visits.

Should VZ just pay all older workers to stay home? Are the younger ones good with supporting their elder brothers? Imagine if all elder doctors and nurses, scientists, truckers, postal workers, grocery workers etc, just said I'm staying home because I'm over 60? Communication services are essential during emergencies. Just sayin'. There are thousands of jobs available with Amazon, and other big names. Not happy at VZ, plenty of other options.

how hard is it to say your customer was coughing so you left. What a surprise, the next customer was coughing too, and wouldn’t you know it? The third customer too.
It’s like... a pandemic

Don’t let them gamble with your health, in the end, you make the call just like always.
Let them try to fire you for protecting your health. A junior lawyer would eat them alive on that one, and they would never want the publicity.
Waiting for an official word from Hans is not on my list of to do’s.
