Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Who else is in the same boat?

I've always had a backup plan in an unlikely (at least until now unlikely) case I get laid off. But with the situation the way it is right now, my entire backup plan was shot to hell. And now there is a real chance I might not have a job sometime very soon.

Mind you, I'll be okay for several months financially, but what I'm going to do after that if this lasts - as some predict - well into the next year, I have no idea.

@2neu - 50/50, huh? That's about what I woulda said. Sad part is,... the lower half of supervisors/managers are always the ones looking out for ol' Numero Uno, and so, have little time for actually, you know,... DOING THEIR JOB (as if they COULD "do it"). Has always amazed me, that a top-tier organization, like Chevron, seemed unable to attract/hire/inspire/retain TOP TIER people in their management ranks. Whatever,... you seem to have a handle on your situation, as others have posted, it's times like these that also create opportunities,... most likely, you'll find a path that leads to a better future. Wish you luck and good fortune.

@2cox, if the worse does happen and you find yourself laid off, collect your unemployment as soon as it’s possible, then take advantage of the federal stimulus extra benefit. You will receive your standard State of Texas Unemployment Commission weekly amount plus the extra $600. This will bonus amount will be good for 4 months and could be extended if the economy is still in shambles or in a prolonged recession. You can cut grass during the summer months for some tax free extra cash or hand wash cars at the customers homes. This may sound like petty advise, but in times of need and worry, a man needs to remain occupied while remaining close to the house, earning a little cash under the table and hunting for a real job. The exercise of physical work removes tension and helps focus the mind to more constructive things. If you have a wife and children, getting out of the house will relieve stress at home. Make that a Plan B at the very least.

My backup plan was going back to college during an industry drop and subsequent layoff, and probably working through that... then getting back into this industry or something similar with a more flexible skill set. So many jobs are suspended right now it just wouldn’t be feasible to work through college, not to mention everything is now online for the foreseeable future.

I was hoping a crisis like this would have occurred a few years later when I was more financially stable. Presently I have about 5-6 months of an emergency fund that I was building up. My goal was to have an emergency fund for 1 year and I just didn’t have the time to get there. Given this economic slap is expected to last 1-2 years, I’m definitely sweating in my seat right now since I may not be able to secure any kind of job in the meantime... I saw unemployment estimates at 35% at a maximum and that means even getting a job as a cashier for example could easily become very difficult.

I trust my superiors only if they’ve earned my respect. There are half who I do respect and half who I have little or no trust in. Those who are transparent in the way they communicate and share information with me and all the company have my respect. Those who don’t, I hope get laid off this culling season. There needs to be a silver lining within this time of uncertainty and despair.

It’s a trying time for the entire country. Try to keep it together. Not everything is within your control and you’re not the only one with worries and problems. Things look terrible now, but this situation is only temporary. Things will improve.

Opportunity of a lifetime right now. Money is cheap (interest), and many businesses will be for sale at a deep discount.

I’m in the same boat.

Feeling a little stress. I’ve had a backup plan for a while. I was going start my own business. I suppose I still could, but now with my investments worth about 50% of what they were a month ago, it doesn’t look so attractive.

Guess we will wait it out and see what happens.

Join the club. At least you are being honest with yourself. That alone is much more than many currently employed Chevroids.
