Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Impact of Furloughs on the Worker

How does the furlough personally affect you? I am interested in human stories. I am a journalist (regional paper, Mid-West) and I am writing a long-read piece on how workers across industries and states are affected. Financial, social, family, psychological or any other impact? What's your story? Feel free to remain anonymous. Thank you!

There are so many complaints about the furloughs and the layoffs but for those complaining I ask you how would you execute better? I'm not talking to the guy from san fran who complains every chance he gets. I'm talking about people in stores and in the corp offices complaining that macys has done them wrong. The business has changed the customers have changed. I miss the old days also but we have to evolve or we will become extinct . There are less people needed today to run the business. People are shopping more online so if you want to blame someone for store closings and loss of jobs how about blame companies like amazon who undercut companies like macys forcing the company to cut costs. Be angry and the media and wall street for holding macys and companies like ours to a different standard. Macys was more profitable than most but our stock went down further and further because we arent all playing by the same rules. I get it we are all upset about pay cuts and furloughs but without this macys has no chance. We dont have the cashflow from stores to pay the salaries. If they dip into the balance there will be nothing to open back up. So we can s— it up for right now and try and make it work (employees furloughed are allowed to apply for unemployment with government disaster relief attached) or they can pay people who arent working and after about a month we can close up our stores for good.

Morale of this contentious thread ...

b—s— and politicking without outcome orientation and transparent value stream mapping – may take you the top and keep you there for some time but ultimately brutal reality will catch up to the gap (which is carefully hidden). So here we are – bickering!!

It's just one guy, basically, who keeps posting about 680 Folsom, and we all know who he is. He's a smart guy with a challenging personality, and managers couldn't or wouldn't appreciate his style. Now, in his post-Macy's life, he's proving that these managers might have been correct about him. We all wish him the best and hope he works out his issues.

Sounds like the IT people in SF need to go back to school....... if they are so ignorant to remain with a company they dislike so much. Ever heard of finding a job you like?

Macy's will be taken over by private equity firm for 950 million and then turned around.

Its market value just a fraction of what it was five years ago, Macy’s is being removed from the S&P 500 index.

Macy’s has been struggling amid competition from discounters and online retailers like Amazon. S&P Dow Jones Global Indices said Tuesday that Macy’s will be removed from the benchmark S&P 500 and shifted to the S&P SmallCap 600 as of Monday. The retailer is being replaced on the larger index by Carrier Global, which makes refrigeration and fire and security products.

At the start of 2015, Macy’s had a stock market value of around $23 billion. In midday trading Wednesday, shares traded at $4.68, giving Macy’s a market cap of about $1.45 billion. The stock has lost more than 70% of its value so far in 2020

I respect your views regarding your employment at Macy's.
But, I feel it's a very individual perspective.
Personally, my experience with Macy's has been amazing. Has every day been great? No.
Has every Mgr been great? No.
But, most of the people I've met have been amazing. I was taught the business quickly and they moved me up just a quick considering my time in retail.
I love working at Macy's. I look forward to going to work.
I hope Macy's does survive. There are alot of us that really care about Macy's and are very protective of her.
I'm sorry to those that were not as fortunate as i was. I wish you all the best.

Macy's (680 Folsom 14th floor) employment was worst career opportunity for me ... So I joined a farm supply company. In every opportunity in my life I will talk down Macy's. If they are gone ... I will be happy.

To the poster from IT in SF, stop your negative post. If you regret your employment with Macy's this is your perfect opportunity to find another employer. Stop posting on this site.

Macy's is paying the full cost of our benefits during the furlough. In my own case, this is over $300 a week when you found their portion and my portion. That's huge and a sign of good faith in it's people. I'm filing for my unemployment tomorrow and looking forward to the day we can return.

Been with Macy’s for 28 years. I still hope to retire from there in a few years. I love my job and my store. I pray for a good outcome not only for Macy’s but for all of us through this horrific time. I will remain positive that we can pull through as a company and more specifically my store, but I do believe that life as we know it will be forever impacted.

I think you mean H1B but yes, they were not furloughed. Probably some requirement of their Visa or something.

You should check into the “rumor” that no H1N1 visa holders were furloughed. Only American citizens

I have 3 children and prior to this furlough I bought a new car to get my children and I around. Now I have no idea how I will pay my bills, rent...childcare....utilities....car note etc. Macy’s has let us with nothing. For this to be a billion dollar company they don’t invest much into the people who have help their operations withstand the test of time.
