Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Make the best of this time - Do not waite for help

This virus situation may last for months more. Simple math. No income for the stores = no money for payroll, no money to buy product to sell. It is a vicious cycle right now.
So what to do? I see all kinds of questions that scream for assistance and uncertainty.

  1. remain calm - do not let the news and hype get you in a panic - you do not make good decisions in a high stress situation.
  2. file for any assistance you may think you are eligible for. Don't be shy or think you do not need help financially. Unemployment - file for it as you are unemployed. Check you state's unemployment web page and learn the system to file.
  3. Assess your skills, abilities and worth to any company. Are you lacking in a certain area? Then now MAY be the time for you to take a class on line in leadership etc. This will make you more marketable to whoever you apply to for a position.
  4. Can you get a degree from college? Is this the right time for you to change fields? You need to evaluate if you want to roll the dice in retail again. You see how fragile it is now do you want to go through this again?
  5. Keep your physical health in good shape. Not working? Then set a simple exercise routine and keep it. Stress is the worst to drag your immune system down.
  6. Keep a routine - do not flounder during the day. Set a schedule to complete tasks and stick with it.

These are just a few tips for those that are asking "what do I do?".
Assess where you are and where you want to be then find a path to get there. Do not waist this down time (even though it is stressful) by sitting around doing nothing.

Good luck and God Bless!

Make no mistake Macy's will use this opportunity to remove higher paid employees. If you have a lot of years in with Macy's this this is the end of your job. Start looking for something else if you are like me I was laid off back in June after 28 years and now I can find nothing mainly because of my age. Macy's let me go at the worst possible time in my life and they do not care. You will be replaced with cheaper labor because Macy's share holders and upper management care for nothing but how much they can line their own pockets.

Never said I don't volunteer or do anything. Just talking about the emotional side of the issue.

If you feel so guilty, go volunteer.
If your besides yourself with so much time go get a job.  There are jobs out there.
Walk a dog for the elderly. Cook some meals for a shelter.

There are a lot you can do

I feel awful that I have all this time bc people are dying, but we do have to use the time we are given for our lives. I am grateful that I have this time away from the macys brainwash to really THINK about who I used to be before macys and what I wanted. You couldn't take this much time off before this happened without walking out, in which case you'd feel guilt and stress for not working. So we all have this time to hit Reset and find out who we are apart from macys. I know that is so dramatic but they just have this way of getting in your head.
