Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

What's our best alternative?

Once this is all over and it becomes clear that a bunch of stores will stay closed and a bunch of folks will remain jobless, where are we supposed to look for new jobs?

There will be tens of millions of people out of a job throughout the country, a big part of that coming from retail. And it's not as if other retail companies will be booming and employing left and right. So what are we supposed to do?

Take online classes to get basic tech skills. Employers are struggling to find ppl with these right now. You don’t need to be a computer genius, you just need to be able lto update a database or make minor website updates (neither are very hard, but ppl get intimidated). There are lots of great online certifications that are free or very cheap. Good luck everyone!

Simple, start planning now. It's great if in 1-2-3 months time the stores reopen and we go back to normal. But if you want to sit there waiting for it, and then surprise we're closed, you've wasted the down time.

Use your skills to look for another career, not just a job. Macy's is not a career position if you are hourly, unless you want to work part time and for low wages. You must use your skills to get further training & education to be able to make yourself marketable to companies or positions in the government sector.
Be innovative - create a job for yourself in these times.
Do not sit an wait for someone to walk you through this mess, you are the only on ein charge of your destiny.

It's bleak but the answer is probably the gig economy (uber, doordash, etc.) that pays peanuts with no benefits. We all should push for California AB5 to be adopted nationwide regardless of your politics. It'll require those companies to provide benefits and greater labor protections normally given to full time employees to their gig workers.
