Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM will shortly layoff or furlough thousands of American workers

"IBM will shortly layoff or furlough thousands of American workers, relying on the government financial support passed the other day. Most of those workers are never coming back.

What process work still needs to be done will come from India, where costs are dramatically lower. Note that this is effectively a way to get around a number of job protection laws for U.S. workers. Clever, if sad, and ultimately bad for the economy."

IBM new CEO mentioned in a meeting the ATT Tech Dev employees that were outsourced with a one year contract with IBM which will end 09/01/2020. Upper Management could request a 1 year extension on our contract and if the contract is granted we will have jobs for another year.

Unfortunately it happened. I'm a now ex-IBM employee and was laid off due to Covid-19 just two days ago. I've heard they also ended all relationships with contract workers as well, laying off thousands.

I know with small companies the rescue package, loans to businesses will turn into grants if they don’t lay people off.

My opinion is, they keep folks around as long as they can milk the gov. Once that ends , massive layoffs into an economy that has 30% unemployment

@xjk the issue is that all consulting is sent to India at IBM now. Even tip of the spear management consulting is now done entirely by India. They control the deal process as the “solution innovation hub” who does all reviews/approvals for deals are done by landed India resources at the office in Ireland. When they need to bring in people to help, they bring in their friends in India. People in the west are responsible for identifying opportunities and having some level of client contact, but that’s it.

Why post something about IBM from Cringely?
He is a hack and full of BS.

He has been predicting this for decades, I would not get consumed over it too much, I want to say one thing, IT people who do repeated tasks and stretch out the "pushback" on any contract are a commodity, and honestly, the company needs to rethink their usefulness. Globalism hasn't really gotten us ANYTHING of value, and now it shows. They always have been a commodity (go back 10 years) and that is why they were hired from India for pennies on the dollar, seems attractive on a spreadsheet to any tech company in a market where all you are given is Facebook and Twitter. Now a good consultant with a ton of experience is not a "commodity", these people are rare and do something very unique and useful. Process Consulting and consulting in this high end space (customer facing consulting) is here to stay, tools need good implementations if they are to sell and survive. I am not talking about an iPhone app, I am talking about tools. IBM, still sells tools for many industries, for now. These SMEs make these things work as well as possible. I hope they come around and realize how important this actually is.

I made the mistake once of spending $3 for a book by Cringely.

Was worth maybe a nickle, maybe.

Companies that lay-off or furlough workers will not qualify for or receive government financial support in the USA. It is specified in the agreement that was signed.

If this happens, it will be the end for IBM. The balance of power shifted to India years ago and those jobs will never come back to the US. But the India teams have shown they are completely incapable of delivering anything without a gigantic bureaucracy behind it, slowing things down. They are not agile, flexible, or innovative nor will they ever be. IBM should learn the lessons of WIPRO, Infosys, TCS who are all building out their teams in western countries.

This rumor came from Cringely. Follow the link from the FB link the OP posted. From what I gather from the article, it would affect non-customer facing jobs if it happens at all. It is after all, Cringely
