Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

USPS workers asking for hazard pay

In the meantime the postal service has been "distributing masks, gloves and cleaning and sanitizing products to more than 30,000 locations; adhering to official guidelines regarding social distancing; eliminated a requirement that customers must sign for packages; updated cleaning policies; updated leave policies "to allow liberal use of leave" and provide 80 hours of paid leave to non-career employees for "issues related to COVID-19"; and allowing some employees to work remotely."

just because the worker protection laws have been established thanks to the unions doesn't mean you get rid of the unions. i don't mind paying union dues. i won't argue that the unions that represent the railroad are somewhat worthless. you look at the unions of other companies and how they are standing up for their employees to get the needed protection compared to what our unions are doing and it is night and day. still i'd rather have a union than nothing at all. otherwise you're just a manager and i've seen how they get treated. no thanks.

Because the are worker protection laws that didn’t exist back then. And what exactly does your union provide for you? For every positive thing you say I can counter with something negative. And let me ask, how much a year do you pay in dues? Are you getting your monies worth? And just who is being protected? Good, productive employees that show up to work and do a good job? No. They don’t need protecting.

Why exactly? Because the people in charge now are such nice guys? I’ll keep the Union protection thanks anyway.

Yes. There was a time and a place for unions. But that time and place is long gone.

Funny the WW1 era was brought up. When do you think the idea of unions and worker protection started. Ever heard of the Populist Party? Learn your history.

Correct. If you’re in a designated hazardous duty area.

i don’t think a lot of Americans today would make it through the flu of 1918 either. Just like back then. You either died, recovered, or were immune to it. It k–led the youngest and healthiest. And actually you do get hazard pay when you’re deployed as a soldier.

I have doubts that today's Americans could have made it through Spanish Flu/WWI, WWII, The Great Depression, Polio, Measles, Smallpox, etc. You don't get special hazard pay just for doing your job. If you think you deserve hazard pay, then our soldiers on the front lines of armed conflict should be in six figures because they are/have been in way more hazardous situations than delivering mail.

USPS employees are the most important workers out there besides medical and first responders. You agreement hosers are just not that important. The managers even less so. UP could automate away 2/3 of their staff and still operate, because their bar is currently so low.

You’d have better luck asking for a new contract at this point (currently everyone is working outside of the last one) then asking for hazard pay. Apparently good old unkle pete is trying to figure out how to blame their $hitty business model on the COVID19 virus for not reaching their own goals and notified the sec that the numbers might not be there.

Hopefully USPS employees will get it.
