Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Layoffs in Progress (May 2020)

IBM Security, received a 1:1 meeting request today from my manager for tomorrow (Thursday).

Any indication as to whether laid off US employees will get an extension of their health insurance?

When Arvind goes all in, he goes big. What a way to start off as CEO. All the naysayers turned out to be right. He's a scumbag in the same category as his predecessor.

According to my package, we get 12 months at IBM-subsidized rates, and then can choose to add another 12 months at full price rates.

Got the axe today as well. 15 years with the company, age in upper 30s, and excellent end of year assessments. All US employees accross multiple squads and lines of business terminated. This was definitely one of the largest RAs in history.

Almost 25 years with the company and boom. IBM is good - except for when you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, then they could care less. And couldn't they have waited a bit longer? The timing is awful.

I was laid off today, along with all of the US employees in my group. However, the Canadian employees in my group, who have the exact same job, were not let go. This layoff seems to apply on to US workers, which is completely unfair.

Since someone asked, layoff package for US based employees is: I get to work until Jun 22 (30 days notice), after I stop working I get 3 months full salary. I also get 12 months of my IBM health insurance at my current rates, after that I get 12 months of cobra if I still need it. They're also offering free "Career services" which I'm going to take advantage of.

It's not bad as a severance package.

Isn't it a little suspicious that some of the comments in this thread are being downvoted? What's there really to downvote here? The quality of the post? This isn't Reddit.

Got RA'd today too. 10 years with IBM. 30 day notice, then 3 month severance. 1 year eligible to buy insurance at IBM rates, then 1 year of COBRA.

13 years in Security, got RA'd today. I'm fortunate that I can transition to retirement, if I want/need to. FWIW... It's the best employee RA package I've seen during my time there – 3 months severance and 1 year of healthcare coverage at employee rates. I feel really bad for others who are early- or mid-career, some of whom were just getting back on their feet after the great recession. Good luck everyone!

Was RA'd a few hours ago. Not of retirement age, only been at IBM for 3 yrs. Fired from IAAS watson & cloud. Wasn't expecting this at all, I had a good cry on my husband's shoulder. There's no one of retirement age in my group, I'm only in my 40s. Now that I know so many others were let go I wonder if others on my team were cut.

Laid off after five years with IBM. I was an information developer with Systems in Austin, Texas.

The problem with IBM is not product, it's culture. There's nothing unifying the IBM workforce except for bad PowerPoint projects and unanswered Slack messages. What's IBM's purpose? The truth is that nobody really knows anymore. Work is work here. You punch in and you punch out. What IBM leadership has failed to grasp is that people still want to feel that the work they do is inherently meaningful. That there's a way forward, and that their contributions matter. Sadly, you won't find that here anymore.

IBM leadership recently encouraged its employees to take their unused vacation days during the current global pandemic. Not because they care, but because they're afraid of losing revenue when half of their workforce decides to take a much needed post-quarantine break. Is this the kind of company you want to work for? There's no humanity left in this sinking ship. Maybe I'm bitter for being let go, or maybe I should've just mustered the courage to say this earlier. Call your years of fretting over job security over and find something better.

I was just laid off today with 27 1/2 years. Most recent job in GTS org. Had my 1:1 after my normal work hours. IBM should have thought through that a bit more. Working on non-paid Overtime, just so they can tell me I’m laid off, bad planning! IBM is going to greatly miss employees like us. We took on work from all the other layoffs in past years. Pulled all nighters to get task completed. The remaining EMPLOYEES complain about having meetings during lunch hours ...., lunch, what’s that? We worked through lunch, hope it gets better, I still own stock.

It happened to me today RA'd with a June 22 end date.  Been with IBM for 3 years but really much longer as a prior Truven employee. I loved my job and my team.  I will miss my co-workers.  Good reviews, awards & then this bad news.  I'm a female and 60.  Something smells rotten here.  I asked why I was let go and my manager gave me the script.  I wish I could have stayed a couple more years but now will have to find something in this difficult market.  Detach, move on and survive...

I have worked for IBM for over 35 years, the past 25 on Db2 for z/OS development. My last day in June 22nd. I was caught off guard in the moment but have always known this day could come anytime. IBM has been very good to me - very good - and Db2 for z/OS is a stellar place to work (apart from a recent overemphasis on "transformation"), packed with excellent minds and an amazing spirit of cooperation. I'll miss that. I have faith in Arvind Krishna to bring the company to new heights just as Lou Gerstner did in the 1990s. No regrets here. It has been a privilege all the way.

Hi @ops - I am so sorry you were axed after 39 years here. It s—s so much I cannot even put it in words. My dad just retired from a company where he spent 40 years, I guess he was lucky.

I joined IBM straight from college about 2 years ago and this is the first time I've been laid off. It's a horrible feeling but I am optimistic that I will be able to find a decent job in a reasonable time period.

Good luck to all and again, so sorry @ops

Got a 1 on 1 from my manager today. I actually felt something was up so secretly recorded the WebEx call because how many times to you get to record something like this yeah? It will be great for souvenir with my time with IBM when they decided to give me the news. Many years (15+) with the company and was told it was not performance related. They have no idea what they just did as the issues my international team will encounter in a few months will hit them hard. Don't say I did not warn them about it.

I'm luckier than most; because, I can transition into Retirement. What concerns me is not only the Highly Technical IBM Employee's let go; but for the Services we all provide our IBM Customers. Does it make sense to R.A. Employee's, when our Customer's are actually paying for our services & IBM is making money off it too! Our Executives have been switching gears to the New AI, Red Hat (seriously folks), Mobile Apps ... and forgetting main core Z. Going after two birds in the Bush; instead of still maintaining the various BIRDs in their hands. >> Good Luck to everyone. Please keep your integrity, acceptance of diversity, empathy and common sense moving Forward! You are What MAKES IBM. (Hired 04/03/78, Hired 01/22/01)
