Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How many of you are taking the relocation package?

Considering how many layoffs there have been lately, is it worth upending your entire family with no guarantee that you will not be laid off sometime in the (not so distant) future?

Oh Goodness! I can't imagine IBM would expect very many to take this and I concur. Not many folks are in a position to uproot their lives from wherever and move to the middle of Missouri. And they know it!!!

If working for IBM was the very last option you had - there was absolutely no chance of you finding another job in your current place, and you were ready to sell your house, move your family (or leave them behind), then maybe, maybe this would be an option.

Also know you are very likely to be laid off again in the next 1-2 years anyway.

Remember, IBM opened this center to get some deal with the state. They could not staff it up for anything, so they are looking for folks desperate enough to move out there to help IBM uphold their part of some deal they made. I would pass unless I was sure I could never find another job again in a place I lived (or actually wanted to move to).

I received the offer as well. Will likely accept to extend my timeline of finding a new role outside of IBM, and taking advantage of the September date to essentially space out what I would’ve gotten with the lump sum. And worst case scenario I’ll still have a job at the end of the day, and will keep looking after relocating. It’s too big of a risk in this job market to turn down a sure offer

With all the WFH orders, I have a feeling the Columbia office won’t be ready to receive then, anyways. Will be interesting to see how they enforce the required move date, if people won’t be back in the office. I’ll likely get a temporary Airbnb or something to scope out the scene before signing an actual lease.

Bottom line, I don’t plan on staying in MO for more than a year. I also don’t have a family so maybe that’s why it’s easier for me.

I’m early 50s and got the offer to Missouri but won’t accept. Agree that nothing is guaranteed there and this RA is such a bad look I’d rather look elsewhere thb.

I only have anecdotal evidence from former colleagues. It is a risk. About 7-8 years ago a group in the DC-MD-VA area where told there jobs were going to Atlanta and a country South America (I forget which one), they could relocate (but for South America they would be paid at the standard rates for the destination country). I knew several in that group who opted to go to Atlanta. 18 months after the move was completed the ones in Atlanta were laid off and their job functions moved to South America. At least, for one of my colleagues, Atlanta was closer to where they grew up and they could retire (though had to find part time work). From that observation, you need to consider if you will be happy being "stuck" where you relocate to.
