Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Good luck to all of you who are going to try to find a new assignment.

I was supposed to be RA'd back a few years ago and had 90 days to find a new job.

Fortunately, I landed a new assignment in a different group with several days to spare before I would have been officially RA'd.

My saving grace is that I had some vital executive contacts who were willing to hire me back and to fight to get me off the RA list as an special exception.

I am so grateful that these executive were able to fast path the escalation, overcome the terrible HR executive review process and justify bringing me back into the group.

My comment to those folks who are going to try to look for a new assignment within the 30 day period, please make sure you have a high level senior executive contact who will be willing to fight for you and hire you to improve your chance of success Good luck to all of you who are going to try to find a new assignment.

How many lambs to the slaughter to support these 2 salaries and bonuses? As well as all the Partners & Managers sitting pretty delivering this layoff message at the comfort of their own homes right now?? They didn't make sales targets, how come they still get to keep their jobs?

I have been told by my (great) executive manager that the process to re-hire a laid off IBMER (particularly in GTS) is a NIGHTMARE and is a long process that ignores any experience, skills or department need. Moving to another department MIGHT be possible but is very time consuming, and just forget about GTS , in all reality

All hiring is frozen during an RA. It takes having incriminating information about an executive to have a chance. RAs are done on purpose. They load up the job tool with a bunch of openings saying that if the person had those skills they would have hired them. They want someone that is Band 6, 25 years experience with 1800 certifications, 3,000 patents, and perma-stained brown lips and nose. We had a person quit in the middle of the 30-days after the RA was announced. We were 100% denied being able to have the position filled with another on our team that was being let go. I even brought it up with our EVP in a meeting and she said it would not even be considered.

It's going to be extremely difficult for anyone in this situation to find a new position within 30 (25 by Tuesday) days. Hiring is very likely frozen. But I suppose if you have a senior exec who can help you, it's possible.

If you come back as a contractor, you can always quit when it is most convenient for you - and ideally, when it is least convenient for them. You don't need to give them any notice - just quit.

I have another meeting scheduled with my manager after the holiday and honestly, I hope it's about this being final. I am almost scared they will offer to have me come back as a contractor, at a huge discount off course. Then I will be stuck between not having a job or taking one where I know I will be resentful for having to take a big cut. I'd rather be spared the humiliation and just take my chances out on the job market.

Maybe I'm in denial...

Sr executive, are you talking about a Vp level or a GM level? does it have to be in the same management chain or different group?

I cannot even comprehend why you would want to go to such lengths to stay with a company that is willing to lay you and thousands of others off because you are “too old” and cost too much. It will be stressful finding something else but I am tired of dodging the RA bullet.

In the Lay-off in 2014 with 30,000 others we had 90 days. I was verbally offered 2 positions but when they went to process I was in THE LIST! Those identified for removal - almost all of us BAND 10 - over 50 ! Had to signs 30 page legal agreement to get severance - all about privacy and no Class Action. So they are right - without an EXECUTIVE to FIGHT for you - you cannot get off the list - 14 years and all 2 and 2+ performance reviews and top sales producer ! Good luck
