This CEO is a lying sack of sh–. They are forcing people out who have 20 years with the company who are disabled, but not retirement eligible. These employees will lose their medical insurance ASAP, will not be able to draw their pension for years, and likely will not be employable because disabled. They are breaking the law and they figure they can get away with it because the economy is tanking. It was in the plans since April and the CEO says in May no layoffs. F—ing liar. And yet his compensation and other executive compensation did not decrease. I feel sorry for the loyal, hard working employees who are getting tagged for the botton 8% without any clue in advance.

If you believe what Exxon Mobile Corporate and their drones said, You are in big trouble. The people need to play the game. If you are a contractor share basic knowledge, but not the real knowledge because your are the first to be layoff and the EM employees will keep their jobs. The word "Thanks for your help" is not because you help the EM people is because you are sharing knowledge that will keep those EM personnel keeping their Jobs.If you want to be a good Exxon or XTO drone follow these instructions that I have seen in their employees. Be a good "Snitcher", talk to people as a friend and then take the information to your boss. Always defend your boss and the company more than your family. If you receive a promotion or transfer that you do not like says: First Smile and says "I am excited". When you are a manager try to invent the wheel or try to push your own system even though the system does not work.As a manager, always try to say something at the meeting even the conversation is not what the conversation is about. Post comments in the internal Exxon mobile webpage greeting people for their accomplishments and post in different Social Media, but everything related to Exxon Mobile or XTO. Of course your picture included (Selfie)

Glad I worked my 38 years and retired. I hated ranking personnel, you could have 15 on your team and 2 were under performers and would be placed in the bottom quintile. Well the other 13 were top achievers, due to forced ranking only a select few would be in the top when more should have been allowed. It is human nature if work performance is the same but someone is liked more they are advanced. I hope and Pray that things turn around, I can only imagine if I still worked how it would be!

ExxonMobil leadership dimension number one for supervisors is to maximize the potential of all of their direct reports, so any supervisor that was able to convert an upper level performer into a bottom 10% performer in 12 short months is basically self identifying as the next to go.

EM is company for losers.
They don’t value hard working people or any technical work.

They spend 85% of the time on meetings and I&D.

They think they are the best in the industry and they know it all.

They promote the wrong people to the wrong jobs.

They prompt the high-fliers to the best jobs and positions.

Laying off contractors is very sad. They work hard very hard.

They should lay off those lazy people who don’t work at all and spend 80% of their time meetings or setting up meetings to met.

Some people don’t care about producing stuff. All they care is the pay check every month.
They are whiling to kiss as.. to have better ranking or good assignment.

I am a millennial and I sympathize with doing as little as possible if you are given a boring job which is the case with most of us on campus. I worked my a*.. off for 3 years, and then in 2017 I was pulled off the project and placed in one of the Global Groups. It is useless work, and adds no value whatsoever to company, and I learned nothing. We do not have projects, and that is our issue. Besides Guyana there is nothing out here, and yes what to do-listen to your supervisor and go reinvent the wheel-reduce well cost from $60MM to $30MM and btw the cheapest one we ever drilled was $70MM with low oil prices and all discounts. These were instructions I was given?

Yes, EM needs to let some people go, and those are incompetent middle managers (most of them have zero leadership skills and even less business acumen); some young supervisors who are s—ing up and dont know sh...and are fake and stubborn as hell and dont bring anything to the table except salt and pepper, and several old VPs doing nothing and collecting checks (yes, VPs they talk a lot-if that counts as work then they do a lot of work).

Dude, the amount of people applauding the guy who says he’s collecting a check and doing nothing for the company is really telling. EM needs to let some people go, and it’s likely the people complaining on this board who think they’re the only ones doing an A+ job at the company. Jesus.

Why are they not offering us the same voluntary offers other companies are doing. Voluntarily retire for 3 weeks pay per year or service. I would be gone.

For the guy who says he’s already retired but still playing the game to collect a paycheck ... could you be anymore oblivious? You complain about the company like its everyone else’s fault but then readily admit you’re being a leach. Do everyone (including yourself) a favor and quit.

Midland has the worst leadership of all. The upper management there is very unfair.

The PIP system is a joke, I agree there are low performers, some great people are getting let go, these meetings are about a popularity contest here in Midland, if you do your job and and don’t kiss butt, you are probably gone, how do I know, I was in the ranking meetings.

It just shows how arrogant our management is. As long as you lose job involuntarily (retirement, performance based, not kissing boss's a.. layoff) you are laid off. XOM should look at attrition during good times and it will tell all. Plus, how committed and loyal employees are, I think very low commitment compared to other companies. A lot of fake commitment, fake engagement, etc. out here. As soon as oil goes up I am gone. For the time being I am retired but did not quit yet, collecting the check-playing the game just like our management does.

Yes, CVX and BP probably kicking themselves now..."dang, why didn't we think of that? Performance based layoffs but don't call it a layoff. The little ones will never be able to tell the difference."

Whoever spilt the beans to Bloomberg did an awesome job. Historically, XOM almost always caught us by surprise but not this time. It's true that we're firing low performers. And how dare the CEO lie about this.

At least Chevron's, Shell's, BP's CEOs are honest and not fake as our CEO. Why not to tell for layoff. Oh, yes, we are doing performance based, and our stupid competitor like Chevron (who by the way is much better than us by many measures) is laying off by accident, or they are laying off top 30%...But we are the smartest, as always...

We hired contractors to supplement skill gaps and augment work load. During hardships such as now, it's just common sense to let go of contractors first and add burden to the employees. It's not true that contractors are cheap, they are best of the best in their class, that's why we hired them. It would be a blow in the employee morale if contractors remain in place of employees.

I see everyone saying lay off contractors first. Given contractors often cost less than 1/2 of a fully benefited equivalten full time employee, managers should not rush out and fire them all. It eliminates a variable cash expenditure this year, but next year only high price staff on the payroll. Thats short term thinking.

Meanwhile the new hires who were told they would be automatically ranked in the middle will in fact be formally assessed....and they were not even informed of this by their supervisors. They won’t even see it coming. Really bad form.

The "rigorous talent management process" mentioned below was completely revised this year after decades under the old system. The old system(while lacking) allowed them to move you up or down the ranking ladder only one "bucket" per cycle. The new improved( for them ) allows movement of a currently ranked top performer all of the way to the bottom if they so desire. The deck is now stacked against you fellow employees. this is definitely a layoff in disguise.

ExxonMobil on Friday denied a Bloomberg report that said it is planning on cutting part of its nearly 75,000 strong workforce mainly in the U.S. While may be true in a sense, corporations have been known to say one thing and then do the exact opposite. Claiming it was "current" economic enviroment. Unless you have a written agreement saying no layoffs, then you are at the mercy of the corporate winds of change. My lifetime motto.....Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.

ExxonMobil on Friday denied a Bloomberg report that said it is planning on cutting part of its nearly 75,000 strong workforce mainly in the U.S. by shedding 5-10 percent of its employees, likely white-collar workers such as engineers and project managers, subject to annual performance reviews.

“We currently have no plans for layoffs. There are no targets to reduce headcount,” a spokesperson for the number one U.S. oil producer told FOX Business. “We have a rigorous talent management process which routinely assesses employee performance."

XOM CEO has just denied this rumor or 5-10% employee cuts in US, according to FOX news. We have let go a bunch of contractors already and there's still plenty of contractors remaining. The remaining contractors should go first before employees. In my department, I know of some slacker contractors that should be let go.

Well if you're chosen then that means you were the weakest among your peers. Survival of the fittest is the name of the game during these times. 3 months severance is also pretty decent compared to packages given out at other companies.

These are not necessarily low performers when it comes to engineers. This is a product of the forced ranking system and not enough upstream work.

Low performers should be fired and if XOM is not hiring, then headcount will decline and money will be saved. Encouraging early retirement of highly paid executives and professionals helps further reduce costs. XOM has always encouraged poor performers to leave...

"Technically not layoffs" What's the difference? It still amounts to loosing one's job.

Too many slackers going to daily meetings saying they did things they did not do. The next day they say the same thing. They love to burn time in meetings where they talk about off work topics.
