Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Received a letter stating I was being laid off, however store manager said I was staying on as a captain?

Has this happened to anyone else? Myself and another supervisor were told we were being kept but changed to captains, but that same night received email about being laid off and our severance amounts.

I haven’t gotten any emails since saying otherwise. Has this happened with anyone else?

Same thing here. Got called I was staying and would be back on 7/6. Then email few hours later being let go with severance. Then 6 days later, called and told I'd be coming back on the 9th and that the letter had been a mistake. However, reading these threads, I'm wondering if they should have said, "You can agree to return OR take the severance." Nothing in writing about returning, only verbal. I think I'm going to send an email saying "I'm taking the severance." And if they call and claim it was a mistake, I'm going to say I'm waiting until July 15 comes and goes then to make sure." So glad they could figure out which celebrities they were having for the 4th of July Celebration, but they can't figure out what the heck is happening with their hard working employees!

I too got the email saying that I am no longer with the company as of June 30. My store manager told me to ignore it saying it was a mistake and that it will be fixed. Tuesday comes around and I have received my final paycheck from the company. So much for ignoring it and it will be fixed.

It seems that no one is leading the process and things are being done in a very unorganized way.
You let go all your leaders and rely on a 1 800 call HR and this is the outcome.
Bad move Macy’s .
Setting yourself up for many lawsuits .

If you don't take the severance then you will be employed in the position you were offered.

If you take the severance, the you are terminated from the company.

I posted long previous reply but got sidetracked with the more legal stuff.
You should have had a detailed conversation with your store manager in regards to your options, even if you are staying and taking a captain position, just so everyone is on the same page. You don't want to be side blinded, again. Go have a talk and make sure all parties involved are on the same page.

I was part of management. I received the emails also. That same day, my store manager called me up and told me my options. I could take the severance package and be done, or I could take a different position, captain, but lower pay. I dont think you can get severance package if you decide to stay and take a demotion. The only other options were basically to try get another position equal to what I had, but others were also going for that position. If I didn't get it, I'm out and no severance package given.
The IMPORTANT thing to remember is this... and I'm only talking in regards to the store level management. Macy's is restructuring and they are eliminating all management positions, and renaming them. As a result, if you are not accepting a severance package or taking an equal position offered, or taking a demotion by choice, then they don't have to compensate you for anything. By restructuring and eliminating, positions, they basically free themselves from lawsuit as long as they don't show bias or anything like that. It's a bad way to let go of people but I've seen worse where companies do that and use it as a way to not pay severance packages. At least Macy's is offering severance when they really don't have to.

Wow, so sad this is being done by email. Too bad they don’t have human resource managers anymore to manage this process correctly and with compassion.

I received an email letting me go then another one with my severance, but the store manager called me saying that it was a mistake because of the captain jobs, did anyone sign a paper accepting or denying work? The store manager triple check for me about severance and at first said I was ok and then…

Several roles were eliminated, so you will be offered severance even if accepted new role. Monday 29th last day to accept.

I received an email too with no warning whatoever. My Clinique field executive told me to call our floor manager. My manager never called me. Why should I be the one to call them? The email was clear enough.

I received the email, but never a call. If I receive a call to report for work, I think I will tell them to piss off.

Yes store managers are not upfront telling about severance. Moving to captain job is demotion. Please stand on your ground and ask for severance it’s better.

Did you agree to the demotion and pay cut to be a "captain?". And, "Captain" of what?
You are severance eligible.
