@txnr, I'd advise you to relocate and take the Columbia job. You don't want to be unemployed in this job market. Once you're in Columbia, you can look for another job if you want to. But best to have that income coming in.

I am one of the employees affected. Have to let my FLM know my decision by Friday. Strongly leaning towards not relocating, on the notion that they'll do the same thing in Colombia in a year or two. But the job market in my field in scarce in Dubuque, and the pandemic hasn't made things any easier. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

@2ijd,
The building is probably closed in Columbia so I'd assume they would be wfh until the entire office is reconfigured for covid guidelines. (desk 6ft apart, full sized cubicles ect)

Did anyone who got RA'd in June take the Columbia deal? How is that going? What exactly will you be doing until you have to show up there in September?

You should never to buy a home if you are assigned to a GTS center.

This has been IBM's playbook for quite a while now. It's well known that older workers are not willing to move without any certainty of future jobs. We are all established in the neighborhood, spouse working in the area, family established and children attending school.

It sure sounds like that. Find a place in the middle of nowhere where 9 out of 10 people you offer a relo to won't take and then for those that do, either RA them in a year or close the shop up in a few years and start in another far flung locale. Wow, how do they get away with this?

I mean, if they said move to Austin or Raleigh, and you get canned, there are a ton of other tech co's in the neighborhood. But, Iowa or Columbia?

Dubuque was advertised as a new "Global Center". They used it to force people from places like Lexington and other places to either move or quit. Its a pattern and playbook that has been used many times.

Didn't IBM just encourage folks to move to Iowa a few years back. And now, they are told to move again. Gee , I sure hope no one has a house to sell or a family to uproot. Good grief IBM - these are people's lives you are messing up
