Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Interview Now, Don’t Wait!

If you have marketable skills, you should be interviewing now. Don’t wait to find out whether layoffs are coming in July, or August, or September. Don’t leave it to some self-interested politician to decide your future. Control your own destiny and avoid gaps in employment. The next lay-off may be the indicator of more to come. There are plenty of jobs out there for skilled people that pay better. Go find one before you get laid off. It’s just business. It’s not personal. Schwab isn’t loyal to you and is therefore undeserving of your loyalty to it.

Always a good idea to be prepared. I was laid off in the September 2019 round. Wasn’t a huge shock given I’m over 50 and been there over ten years, the key group they wanted to dump.

I got the severance and spent the rest of 2019 traveling, finally taking a cross country train trip. I started job hunting in January but that came to a screeching halt with Covid.

You can have it both ways. If you get an offer, make them wait until you’re certain about the lay-offs. It puts you in a better bargaining position if you’re not unemployed and desperate.

Yeah, no. I’d rather get the severance package first.

I agree with the spirit of this post, but I think some people may be waiting for the severance package. Why leave a month sooner if there is a chance you’ll get a payout. That said, if you think you’ll be impacted, you should be ready to hit the ground running with an updated resume, and know what jobs are out there.
