Geoscience Middle 1/3 to PIP

Middle 1/3 to pip here. It's funny how you go from essential worker to pip this fast. My supervisor told me that unemployment benefits would not be contested if I apply BTW. No plan for pip exists yet if I were to take that route. They sent a strong message to leave for sure. Take the money and run. Time to reinvent myself. Geoscience btw.

Think about this. ExxonMobil wants to reduce workforce to save up more cash for 3 yrs!! The PIP is just a cover for lay-off. On top of that, how can you do any different in 3 months to show your improvement?

The advantage of taking the package and resigning is you don’t have to show up to work or make any effort towards “performance improvement”.

I've known a few people that took pip and come out of it and are still employed. This year though...

Once you are in PIP, your chance To move up the bracket is nearly impossible. Your future in ExxonMobil is nearly over. So why not take the money and work somewhere else?

I've been offered termination with 3 months salary or PIP. Didn't quite understand the advantages of termination since PIP guaranties same 3 months of salary plus some hope to pass the PIP

“ I’ve seen a lot of geoscience moves. Are some Business units for affected?” Multiple BUs will have greatly reduced capital for the foreseeable future so less need for geos when you are not drilling. [And most young geologists in UOG have never really had the opportunity to develop formation evaluation / prospecting skills as geosteering doesn’t really teach you that.] Have you not noticed that many of the non-manager geo moves in UOG are to work in the divestment group? That’s telling right there. Also ... there have been and continue to be moves of geoscience managers from UOG into nebulous jobs at UIS so they can eke out a few more years and retire.

I had this same thing happen in 2015. Middle third, about 5 years in, getting good reviews and praise from KO's and managers. No issues, making major contributions to the team. Suddenly I was PIP and told to leave. Gave me some excuse about not showing improvement. I spent 1.5 years waiting tables and serving pizza. Hope you have better luck.

I feel sorry for those recently promoted to CL 28/29. This is extremely competitive rank group. If you were a middle ranked CL 27. It is likely you dropped to a full 20% because you are competing with high ranked managers AND 20 and 30 year veteran professionals. It is normal to droop when someone moves into a more competitive rank group. This is tough competition. So if you have a skill that could be done by a CL27, and you are not contributing at the CL 28/29 level. Your ranking dropped because you are in a group of elite and smart people who were consistently highly ranked. You were promoted to your level of incompetence. The HR system tries to look at past ranking in lower level rank groups, and does not terminate based on being new to a rank group. In many cases you are better off being highly ranked in a lower CL than poorly ranked in a higher CL

Project implementation plan.

This year it's essentially how the company is planning on significantly reducing OPEX.

what does PIP stand for?

20 yr w/ the company, UBD, promoted from CL25 to CL29 in less than 10 years which demonstrates technical capacity and work attitude. Being ranked top 1/3 for 9 years, mid 1/3 until this ranking period, then dropped to bottom for “not good enough in contributing through others” this time. Supervisors place talkers above hard-working technical people.

another upper middle 1/3 here:
2^3+2.75+1/inf years for me in the halls of indecision. –math So the managers can't figure it out..
EMRE; with project kudos still this week. no one knows i'm in the PIP.
handover should be fun...

if you're still an engineer here you should realize the company is really approaching ln(0).

it will be nice to go where engineers are appreciated.

i hope a new grad reads this. and all the millenials too.

What is UBD/UIS? I've seen this on a couple of threads but don't recognize it. Maybe I'm too new (only been with the company for 1 year).

It’s like i could have written this post myself.
Middle 1/3 last year, upper 1/3 the year before that. Solid technical work, went straight to PIP at the bequest of a manager/VP despite great KOs from peers and project leads.
PIP doesn’t exist. Supervisor hinted it would be uphill and subjective, and wasn’t even clear who makes the ultimate decision.
11 years. CL27. Male. Not white. UIS.
I’ll take the “offer” next week.

Wow....I originally posted this comment to another thread and someone posted it as its own. As the original poster: I have 13 years with the company. I'd rather not get into the specifics of the feedback, but suffice it to say, it would be hard to get a project going for me to get out of pip. The areas i was not competitive in were for opportunities that we're seridipitous at best. UBD btw.

Are you UBD or UIS or XTO?
Why did your ranking went down this year?

New system is going to breed bad things. Supervisor said they would construct PIP details a week out if that was my decision. Legend of the PIP is not good.
