I like many other Verizon employees used Bright Horizon backup care during the pandemic. I was fired today and told that I used it unethically for personal gain. Yes, it was a personal gain as it offset the price of childcare, as every benefit does in turn cause “personal gain” for the recipient. So my Verizon time is finished after spending 11 years with the company. On to bigger and better things. My .02

They will fire any one that has been their the longest, it does not matter what you do. You can breath and get fired. Get a clue. And then your lucky if Union even shows up, oh and by the way you do not get unemployment for getting fired. You might for a couple of weeks then they will dispute it and you will owe.
Well the investigation hasn't hit NJ yet. Because., 2 SMs in our store have got away with it so far. This what happened, on March 15th they closed a majority of the stores til at least early April. 1 mgr was not redeployed till June 1st thus he stayed home for 10 weeks with his wife and didn't need anyone to pay for child care cause he was home and got paid for a 40 hour week and he happily accepted this money for child care? I don't know if that falls under the investigation rules, but to me its shady? The other one was redeployed to wfh in April and got the benefits for her HS aged child,again she had no one watching the child? Not sure if that's against policy or were they supplementing their income?
Own you know how Verizon does. They’ll find something or just craft some twisted sh– for an excuse to run you off.

So, last commenter - did you use it for every day your son was being watched, or did you use it for WORK DAYS and HOURS ONLY? Because if you reported on off days or off hours then yeah you absolutely screwed up.
I feel like there are so many unanswered questions here and no details at all, probably because they’re embarrassing. There’s literally no way the company would just fire people for making a mistake with backup care and not letting them reimburse the company. You clearly did something egregious.
I feel your pain. I was also terminated for using it. I was informed that I used it for personal gain which violates the company credo. I was told that I over claimed. I claimed for every day my son was being watched. Unfortunately my state is an AT WILL state, so I can’t do anything about it.. off to better things
How’d they find out? What did you do? Many of us have been using the benefit during working hours since our regular childcare is unavailable. You had to do something wrong - so wrong, in fact, that they didn’t even give you the chance to reimburse the company. Which in that case, you absolutely deserved to be fired.

Yes, I'm sure they fired you for absolutely no reason, not for you doing something that violated one of the rules associated with that benefit. Smh. People like you are why we can't have nice things.
Go read the rules again about who you can claim for, what hours and who you can pay to care for the kids. If you were fired, you broke one of those rules. VZ has paid out tons of $ during the pandemic for backup care. You are the first I've heard of that has been fired.

Don’t worry. You will not be fired. The Union will get your job back. The only question is how much back pay you will get while you are off during the process. I have seen this play out many times.

They shoved using Bright horizon down our throats. They told us to use our neighbor or brother or cousin or whoever and they will pay us. Doesn’t surprise me.
