WHAT IS A SEVERANCE PACKAGE AND WHAT MAKES SOMEONE ELIGIBLE?

Hi, I was laid off in Macy's on June 30th and got my severance package today. I'm very scared of this severance package and have no idea if I should sign it or not. Like, I want the pay, but I feel like there is alot more to this package than at face value. And knowing how shady Macy's is, I dont know what screwey sh– they put in the document. I dont know what to do.

Macy's has more and better lawyers than you'll ever have, even as a Class.

That was scheduling issue with union contracts involved if I remember correctly, and the average payout was around $2000-$3000? It isn't even close to this topic.

It doesn't take a master mind to know that M wasn't in a good place prior to Covid, so slamming them is easy and again nothing to do with this topic. Folks will believe you can sue for anything all the time, and it's not easy with severance packages and reorganization. Most contracts have similar verbiage such as ' you can not bring suit ' in them for this type of transaction. Suits are brought against organizations all the time, most fail and never make the news. You would be surprised how many come across the legal departments desks. Why else would all companies have Risk Management and Legal teams that are paid very well. Of course there are suits that are won, then one or two articles wrote and then forgotten. Funny how there isn't much follow up. The word SETTLE comes into mind.

You want revenge against a place you don't like working for, and/or you just lost your position. You hope this is your avenue that will lead to a 'pay day'. I'll keep an eye out for the Class Action Suit against a company that's stock price hasn't been above $7 in months and is struggling to to keep afloat. Maybe folks will win one and get some 4 ways, rounders, shelving and visual props in return.

Macy’s sows not play by any rules, it’s the worst run company I have ever been involved with! The shadiest practices! I was recruited away from Nordstrom and Macy’s is not even close to running a ethical biz! There is going to be lawsuits! Did you not see what just happened in Seattle? The Union just won a
Fat lawsuit! This company is outdated and is going no where but to it’s gravesite.

Class action suit, yeah right. You clearly have no idea how many levels it takes to offer packages in any company. I don't understand how folks believe organizations do this with hidden agendas, or by breaking employment laws.
OP, if you want to take the severance do it, if not take a role the organization has offered you and best of luck in your new position. There isn't a hidden agenda, they won't come and take your family pets. Everyone talks about suits and laws as if they are an expert. Large organizations play by the the rules and have multiple levels insuring that it is all done fair and correctly. Check out Nordstoms, JCP, L/T on this site alone and you will see the same BS about suits on a wide range of topics.

By the way In most class actions, you need not do anything to join the lawsuit. Most class actions are opt-out lawsuits. This means that class members (those whose legal interests are represented by the suit) are automatically included in the lawsuit unless they choose to opt-out, or decline to participate, in the case.

It's a severance package because your position in the company no longer exists. It happens in every company (even profitable ones) where titles and responsibility change.

The true question is Do You believe that you have a future in Macy*s?

A "Warn Act Notice" was sent to all employees on 03/30. You either didn't read it, or it went to your spam file. I can send you a copy if you want.

Their severance letter was garbage, did not list the breakdown of Medical premiums all h with total weeks and lump sum ( as did on first letter on June 25th). That’s deceptive! They just want us to sign and release who hopes not too many people will seek legal counsel. This entire BS, has class action lawsuit written all over.

Depends on your state laws on east coast we have a law called the warn act. Basically there was no noticed of being laid off. And it was a massive lay off. Look at your local laws

Yeah maybe contact a lawyer to see how much it would cost. There is a lot of stuff in there and probably some stuff we don’t understand. I’m thinking about looking into having a lawyer go over it just in case. Good luck to everyone.

Contact a lawyer and find out how much he/she will charge you. Talk to other employees in the same situation. Weigh you're options carefully.
