Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why should anyone work for TPS?

What is the point of working in TPS as an SME? The business units think you’re useless and the management cuts you first and most. If I survive this, I’m going to try to move to a BU. Lower rate of cuts and more perceived value to the company.

Op. You think you are a SME and are just coming to this conclusion now? Tech experts are the stars when all boats are rising and good advise can same a lot of wasted effort, but during a fall those directly pulling dollars from the ground are the only ones that matter.

The adage "have you hugged your wellhead lately" used to be the way to go. The closer to the actual production (field location) meant you could survive personnel reductions. HQ staffs (ie Corporation departments) used to take big hits either in job loss or reorgs where jobs went to the BUs.

I don't think that is the case any longer. Australia took a big cut, same with AMBU.....

What is your advice to the newer employees facing these reductions for first time?

TPS is Technology Projects and Services .. all under JG. No profit centers in TPS so those operating companies/groups tend to be harder during corporate downsizing.

I agree with OP. I was in ETC when I was hired on. I left from there the first time they did a restructuring and put non technical people in charge. I went to a BU and have never been happier. Also that is not true about PSG and promotions. I will say in a BU an individual contributor is not looked as highly as an individual contributor in ETC.

TPS pays more to do less work.

Individual contributors are considered superstars in TPS, lots of participation trophies, easier to get promoted and achieving higher PSG compared to slogging in a BU.
