When a company gets acquired by Cisco, they typically have one year to mix into the fold of Cisco products (ie find other Cisco money making products they can sync with). After one year, the honeymoon is over and the bean counters start heavily analyzing the acquisition for cuts and layoffs, unless it is making huge money. It used to be that you had to find your niche with the router products, or you died, but now it is more broad based. Cisco WAY overpaid for AppDynamics. It was totally obvious at the time, if you had half a brain. But Cisco was playing the typical game they play: buy companies to take them off the competitive grid. When you have big pockets, you can play that game.

Dont waste your time with these clowns.when they say this is a cisco backed company running like a startup, they mean it's dysfunctional from the top down.management treats work culture like a high school popularity contest.whoever kisses the most a** gets to move ahead everyone else stays behind.corrupt mgmt protects their friends who repeatedly screw up behind the scenes.good work is not valued here just a**kissing.morale has suffered many reorgs have happened.company is desperately searching for leadership since several of the key stakeholders have left or been pushed out. cisco paid too much $$$ for this company and will strip it bare or sell it off and buy another apm product

do you work for appdy?

No, but Cisco acquired appdy which means that it will start falling under the Cisco culture, HR, and policies. Cisco will take what it wants from it, get rid of or sell off the rest, and turn whatever it keeps into Cisco.

It's done that over and over since Chambers retired.

... Their recruiter contacted this week, hiring has slowed because of Covid.

True. Most hiring is frozen except for business critical or essential roles. Requires SVP approval to hire right now. Most likely, they'll slow roll you & string you along until you threaten to take another offer if they don't start you ASAP and then they'll have to decide on how badly they actually want you versus another candidate who's willing to wait until we return to the offices.

Is their product still competitive with New Relic and Datadog?

No idea. I don't work in that BU and I'm not familiar with the product.

Is this still an exciting place to work?

Can be, depending on the team and BU. Can also be hell. Or anywhere in between.

Do they pay market rate?

Yes. Usually when you're initially hired. Don't expect pay increases without promotions. If you're early in career to mid career, you can expect some promotion from pay grade 4 (entry level) to pay grade 6 (early in career) to pay grade 8 (mid career). Getting from 8 to 9/10 is much harder. Getting from 10 to 11 is rare and takes a lot of social engineering.

There have been some concerning reviews on Glassdoor.

Just like here. There's a lot of bitter ex-employees who got laid off or felt they got screwed over and left and they "stick it" to Cisco here and on Glassdoor. The key is finding the ones that have calmed down and share more "truth" instead of hurt feelings. I was let go, and I didn't like it, but the severance was way better than other companies so I wasn't bitter about it.

Is this still a good place to work??

Can't answer that for you. There are great teams here. There are terrible teams. And in between.

Are you willing to work at a company that acquires companies and then has large work force reductions–they call it Limited Restructuring or LR's–periodically to keep the overall head count the same at around 75K employees? You may only last 3-5 years. Or you may make it 15.

Are you a middle aged person? If so, don't plan on staying here long term. I've read here that your age plus your pay grade plus your years of service is a measurement that increases the size of the LR target on your back. If it's 55 or higher, you've got a big target. Also, if you make more than the median pay for your pay grade in your job classification, you have a big target. Put the two together, because older people tend to make more than younger people, and you have a HUGE target on your back.

Like I said, I'm not bitter. My eyes are wide open. I work a week's worth of work, take home a week's worth of pay, and come in the next week. I don't expect that I'll be there more than the next 30 days and I'm always happy when I don't get a sudden meeting invite for a one-on-one with my manager and no information about what what he wants to talk about. If you get that, it's your "here's your LR package, call HR if you have questions" 30 day notice.

Many left after vesting their stock. I don’t think cisco will ever recover or make profit from the $3-4Billion acquisition.

Cisco acquires a company and slowly replaces the engineers with smooth talking salesmen. Engineering can be easily outsourced at Cisco, while sales is core to the culture of the company.

Layoffs typically occur semi-annually.
