First full-time job out of college and the first conversation with my new manager I get the lay-off warning. Is there peace of mind working in the oil industry?

Welcome to O&G. If you have the stomach for it, ride it out and it can be lucrative. If not, move on. No hard feelings
I don't know what others on this board think but, as a long-time Chevron employee, I am disgusted with how your new manager handled this discussion with you.
Yes, the oil industry has periodic staff reductions (typically accompanied w/ severance bonus if you are let go). Your manager should have provided a (5 to 10 year) perspective (given their experience during that time frame when they decided to stay w/ CVX). Why not encourage a new hire about the benefits of long term CVX employment instead of a issuing just a warning that layoffs are coming?
CVX has spent time to recruit and hire/develop you— though there are no guarantees— let's not "throw new hires under the bus" immediately
CVX Retired - I rejected the package and sued after Accelerate. I was offered 4x pay plus time to quality for full pension payout. I immediately said yes against my attorney’s wises. I did get stuck with attorney and court fees but I still came out at 3x salary and I got my full pension.
I filled my claim and within 90 days I had a settlement offer. I do love CVX and did not want to drag this on so I took the offer. Just so you know, CVX sets aside a settlement fund every time these events occur. You are pretty much guaranteed what is offered in the EOI plus something. I have friends that have gotten more but it took 6 months to a year. CVX does not like these things to go on for a long time so they work hard and fast for a settlement.
I have actively steered young people away from the industry. When asked if I could possibly help someone get on with the company...I don’t do it. The money is good and it seems like a great career, but in my estimation, a better life is elsewhere. My two cents.
If it becomes big enough, then it could become a class action discrimination suit, couldn't it? Soooo many published media and material about the ELT's intent to purposely diversify selection TEAMS (who the heck knows - like the electoral college) and the selection SLATES. Pay attention people!!!
Do they settle lawsuits for 5x salary, like the other thread was saying?
Ya the peace of mind comes on the 7th and 22nd. Especially March 7th.
@1lki+15oOC9GB Nail on the head. Looks like the best bet is to get laid off and throw a discrimination lawsuit on them. F this three week c-ap. They don’t want fair. If they did, it would be blind with names, age and colleges removed from the slates.
"This isn't your daddy's oil company no more" This simplification is very true. I have 15 years and have been through 4. So tired of this. The project queue is dried up and there is no more excitement. The carrot of big pay isn't even enough anymore without supermajor job security. The only winners right now are those planning on retiring, EOI and lump-suming on their last expat assignment.
No, there is not. You are young though. Chevron looks good on a resumè. Stay a few years and use this place as a bridge to somewhere better. If you stay too long, it will be harder to pivot.
It sounds like you have an honest manager. Listen up, and always be thinking about alternate plans.
Don't plan on staying 5 years. They will continue to shrink. It is just how the barrel roles. As the old saying goes, take the money and run mate.
No. There isnt. Ive been here 8 years and have gone through 3 lay-offs (re-orgs/transformations as they like to say)
This industry has a piss poor long term outlook. This should be a stepping stone at best for you. Dont plan on staying for 30 years.
