Check-in comments controversy

I saw that email about the check-in comments that "did not reflect CX Centers culture or values." Does anyone know what these comments were?

It's hard to have an opinion on it without any details.

Cisco has always teetered on the edge of being a cult. Now, they're much worse - they're a fascist cult with whom you dare not have a different opinion. Cisco has gone full on Communist.

If you think Cisco is a cult... you wouldn’t make it a day at AWS.

There were two comments I saw, something to the effect of why are we discussing this at work, and the other was all lives matter. I have not confirmed this but I am hearing both people have been separated from the company.

On a positive note, guessing no one will be LR'd during COVID and all the other 2020 events. Enjoy your time at home slumbering on Webex call #5 for the day.

I think this is an important topic but it sickens me a bit to have so many companies just leverage it and pay lip service to it. I mean, what are they really changing? Are they going to promote people on actual delivered value or still same old boys club? Is hr going to fire people for discriminatory remarks? Are we going to support minority owned businesses? Can people use time to give to protest or work on campaigns? Donations are good but it's not always about money...

I could not possibly agree with you more! Cisco makes me puke, given what I have seen and experienced. Suddenly, they have religion on this issue.

Some standards documents have literally thousands of mentions of master and slave.

Stop. Just stop.

I’ll give ya “slave”, we can come up with a better word for that. But the rest is just ridiculous. All of this “cancel culture” and bringing us to “day zero” is going to have the opposite reaction.

Never in a million years did I ever think the thought of voting for Trump would ever cross my mind. But after the past few weeks it has. And I am not the only dem who feels we have swung wayyyyyy too far to the left. I made this confession to a few of my other liberal friends...they revealed the we’re feeling the same.

blackbox testing vs whitebox testing.
whitehat hacker vs blackhat hacker.

It will be interesting to see if it's possible to get everyone to change these terms because they are so ingrained after such long use.

GitHub is working on replacing the term "master" on its service with a neutral term like "main" to avoid any unnecessary references to slavery, its CEO said on Friday.

The code-hosting portal is just the latest in a long line of tech companies and open source projects that have expressed support for removing terms that may be offensive to developers in the black community.

This includes dropping terms like "master" and "slave" for alternatives like "main/default/primary" and "secondary;" but also terms like "blacklist" and "whitelist" for "allow list" and "deny/exclude list."

The concern is that continued use of these racially-loaded terms could prolong racial stereotypes.

I recall using a software repository tool long before Git & Git Hub came out that called it's primary branch main. CVS and ClearCase come to mind. Other tools that came soon there after used different terms to avoid claims of copying them. But, for geographically separated development, there was always a master replica with slaves spun from it. In retrospect, the master/slave relationship was a bad name and should have been primary/secondary.

I guess I'll have to get used to typing git co main instead of git co master.

There is a project under way to remove “racist terms” and decolonize our documentation. You wouldn’t believe some of the terms being targeted, but one example is traffic blackholing.
Which is going to be a problem for many science disciplines, who will need some new words, especially anything with black in it.
The problem is that black, Like white, in science, is not a color. It’s the absence of light. So, a black hole is not a color, it’s a description of something into which everything can fall but no light can escape. I suppose it doesn’t matter In the quest for a more just society - just burn it. .

From Konstantin Kisin

You will NEVER be woke enough. Ever.
You can surrender inch by inch until you don't recognise yourself in the mirror but in the end, they will demand you accept something you can't stomach and when you refuse they WILL come for you.

LinkedIn had one of these race love-ins as well. Well, some extremely brave exec took the decision to allow anonymous comments so that people “could share their lived experience”. That did not go well. But I’m sure they learned their lesson - no anonymous comments any more.
We aren’t talking about overtly racist comments. Not drinking the Kool-aid is enough to provoke retribution. And that’s wrong.

I heard yesterday that during Thursday's Check-In someone wrote "no lives matter" in the chat window and he was terminated immediately (& no longer showed up in Directory on Friday). Apparently, Fran stated on Thursday's call that someone had been fired the week before for making an inappropriate comment in the chat window during that week's Check-In.

It's not even about disagreement with management, it's saying obviously offensive and clueless remarks in the workplace. You gotta be pretty dumb to say anything remotely racist in a work chat that's timestamped for all to see

...with your name attached to the comment."

Has anyone noticed all the s—ups that tout the party line? Hey, look at me, I've drank the kool-aid!

It's one thing to actually agree with something management says or does, but the blatant s—up comments are demeaning. It's sad to think you have to do that to move up and that there are manager's that fall for, or want, that c-ap.

And, when you publicly disagree with something management says or does, well, you're just ending your career, either through stagnation, getting onto the next LR list, or for really egregious comments, immediate termination.

It is hard to believe anyone is that stupid. Probably didn't even get a severance package.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but sometimes people are just so racist they don't even recognize that their feelings and opinions are racist and think their comments are perfectly acceptable.

As to a severance package, I don't think packages are made available to people terminated for cause. At least, I certainly hope so.

As I've been told by a manager, "you can say anything you want to on your last day."

There were some questionable remarks made by a few people in the recent check ins. Really dumb to do that at work with your name attached to the comment. Even if you aren't 100% on board with some of their recent talks / donations, just shut up

Maybe they should fire the VP for not reflecting Cisco values - reinforcing racial, stereotypes.

The funny thing is that following the EMEA VP’s check in this week, she posted a link to a a YouTube video of Cisco people singing “I shall survive”. One of the guys in the video was wearing a fake Afro wig - not quite black face but close.

OP, find the video replays of the June 1 and June 10 check-in's and download the chat transcripts.

Search for comments with "@" and when you see several comments for @somebody, search for the comments somebody made. When you find the comment, it will be pretty obvious which comments did not reflect the culture or values of Cisco, CX, etc.
