I recently joined Chevron as a Software Engineer, during the first Townhall I attended, they were talking about a reorg. Now, I'm very paranoid because I haven't proven anything yet in Chevron since I'm new. I was wondering if new hires are affected because it wouldn't make sense to hire someone in the midst of a reorg if they're not planning on keeping them.

No one is immune. Although, my guess is most folks who are pretty fresh out of college will be safe. For one, your pay scale is on the lower end and two, you haven’t been around long enough for Chevron to get a good idea of your potential. You’ll be spared until the next reorg in 3 or 4 years
You’re fine for now. In a few years some new CEO will complain that we spend too much on Software Engineering, say it’s a commodity, that we need to outsource most of it and keep “thought leadership” in house. Just make sure you are one of the “visible” software engineers that will end up as one of those “thought leaders” a few years from now.
I’ve been with the company over twenty years. You are in the drivers seat my friend, act as such. The company recruited you for a reason and it wasn’t to let you go in a year or two. One of the top jobs in demand right now at Chevron is Software Engineering. Keep learning and strive to be the best ‘’you” can be.....
They learned the lesson of the 80s. Being a brand new hire in software engineering is a pretty safe place to be right now; the org will probably move around if it moves at all (you may get a new boss or coworkers), don’t be surprised to learn that you’re safe. If you said you were recently hired into one of the job families that disappeared then I would say to start looking now for your next job because that severance won’t last long enough when you’re going to be competing with all the other IT people who are/will be payed off from the other energy companies and healthcare.
No worries, OP. I know many others with over 20 years who haven't proven anything yet in Chevron.
No, if you’re a real software engineer, they likely want more of you. CIO said 30% reduction, but it is going to be higher, because they have designed the org to need more software engineers and will leave those positions open and lay off the people who are too highly paid and only talk about process. From I what heard, there more positions for software engineers than the company has software engineers. So you are safe.
If you are a white or Asian male, yes, be afraid. Too many of us. Our leadership is virtue signaling now. If you aren’t those two you are safe. Oh, I forgot to throw in straight. Trump will win 2020 easily if this keeps up. Otherwise, you are probably good. Listen to the ELTs phone call today. They want everyone to know they will diversify slates if they are too much of any one thing.
