Except for the scant promotion I think I’ve had 2 in 14 years.

why not? then just work like a grade 6

The question was is grade 6 pay for a 48 yr old good. It's not.

But, yeah, as a retiree, any income to reduce your burning through your retirement savings is gravy. I'd rather work a part time gig to give me something to do, but enough free time to enjoy the things I want to do rather than be 6 months on, 6 months off.

And, if I recall correctly, NC has an account, so to speak, for each employee and when you go on unemployment, you start withdrawing funds from that account and once you've drained it, you can't get unemployment any more. It takes more than 6 months of employment to fill up the account so you can't really work 6 on, 6 off. YMMV in other states.

And, yes, if you're paying me grade 6 wages at that age, you're going to get grade 6 level work. I sure ain't working any harder than the pay deserves.

why not? then just work like a grade 6.. if you are close to retirement ages or older ages, anything is good, i have a surf/cycle friend who lives in hawaii, work for 6 months for any job and then spend next 6 months on government unemployment checks, and repeat, and enjoy the life there,

after being laid off from cisco x years later.. we all figured out there is no need to work hard, due to you will be treated the same at kick out time..

life is more than just work and $..

I suspect my friend's life is more fun than us..

48 years old and offered grade 6!?

I doubt that's good pay in south Cal. Although Cisco does set their pay grade windows different for SJC vs. RTP (CA vs. NC), pay grade 6 is not appropriate for anyone 48 years old unless they've done a major career change recently.

Pay grade 4 is for college interns.
College hires, or people at the start of their careers, are pay grade 6. People aged 40+ are NOT at the start of their careers.
People with 3-5 yrs experience can get pay grade 8. If you manage to be lucky, you can jump to 10, 11 & 12+ as you promote to tech lead, manager, or architect, then director, VP, SVP and higher. Principal Eng fits in there somewhere.

Many people, probably the majority, get stuck in pay grade 8 for years. I've got 15+ years of experience in my role and I've been a pay grade 9 and pay grade 8 at Cisco. And, yes, pay grade 9 does exist, but it's not common in many BU's.

Not only do grade bumps not happen every year, pay increases don't happen every year either.

Aren't SVPs and ELT something like a pay grade 16 or 18? If you got a pay grade bump every year, those people who came in as a 6 as a college hire back in the early 90's and have 20-25 years with the company would be a pay grade 26-31, and those do not exist.

The only thing you will get a bump in is your rear during the next LR.

That will not happen.

Ha. You were blatantly lied to. A grade bump absolutely will not happen every year.
