Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Lay-off strategy

The first time I was laid off I worked nonstop to get a new job and worried it to distraction. I landed a new position after 9 months. The second time I was laid off I had more in the bank, kids were mostly grown, and I just went fishing. I landed a new position after about nine months when I bumped into an old buddy in a bait shop. Its hard to fight the commodity cycles and much more enjoyable if prepared for dips. Good luck everyone... I am going to EOI this round (after 30 years) as throughout the booms and busts I have still done rather well for myself.

@vfg, No, no one thinks you are dead wood or a lazy civil servant, but I suspect some are wondering how interesting your life must NOT be to be trolling and bragging about whatever you do in your boring retirement on a current layoffs site for CVX and how that applies to anyone here??? Again, you don't need to reply, we've heard you toot your own horn, we get it. Go find something interesting to do with your life now if it's at all possible, yawn....

I was laid-off from Chevron USA in 1985. Was devastated, young children, house payment,,, Fortunately my wife was working and we hunkered down. Out of work for 6 months then cycled through two geotechnical companies and yes, had to move my family from NorCal down to SoCal in order to work. Determined to get back into O&G I took a job with Exxon and again moved my family, this time to Houston. That worked fine until again laid-off. Not good for your ego. Learned a hard lesson about the Industry, never again. Moved back to NorCal to take a position with the state where I have been working for the past 27 years. I now have grandchildren, a vacation home in Truckee, and a pension (replete with medical) for life. I'm sure some of you who read this will call me dead wood, a lazy civil servant, whatever. I have had a fine, rewarding career here and could care less about the price of oil. Layoff hurts but persevere and believe in yourself.

My career path: Shell 13 yrs, quit. Local construction contractor 4 yrs, fired. Contract Engineer then Tosco! 4yrs, laid off. MW Kellogg 100 days, 2 years on unemployment with a young family, Back to Contract Engineer....hired on CVX (with a huge pay cut) at age 46. Retired from CVX after 15 yrs. I always had a successful side gig. Now happy & secure in California’s State of Jefferson. Once you experience a successful change.....you realize it’s actually better, and invigorating.
