Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Tuboscope- Last one out, turn out the Lights

Stick a fork in her, this place is done. Been a good run boys and girls but the writings on the walls. Here in west TX, were out of work. Hearing the Houston plants and Louisiana plants are out too. Inspection has been dead for months. Nobody hear surviving this one. Nobody in our upper management team has any ideas.

If it’s so terrible, just leave. Who is making you stay? Why stay somewhere you’re not happy at? I think we have a great company and I love working with the people in our group. The day that stops, it’s time to find something else. If you’re this miserable, what can you possibly contribute to our company?

@7tiw+15t7pZGL Good to know you left, apparently you didn't fit in with our group.

I still work here and it's not a cesspool.

I worked there for 7 years. It’s definitely a cesspool.

@7kri+15t7pZGL Maybe if you worked there you realize it is not a cesspool. Possibly where you come from you are use to a nice clean air condition office, take a look around you, maybe you are the cesspool!
You apparently have no idea what is in the buildings that are on the site.

What does Tuboscope even make? I went to their Holmes Rd facility a couple of years ago for the OTC shrimp boil and felt like I was in a sc-ap yard. Why would corporate bring customers to that cesspool? Let this shi+ show crash. Does t sound like Nyone is happy there.

Management is in way over their heads. Cut some fat from the top for the love of God. Do we really need this many VPs huddled upfront with nothing to do? No one ever comes to the back to check on anything. Blind leading the blind.

Tubo is a giant sh– show. I saw the writing on the wall one and a half years ago and quit on my one accord. I was apprehensive at first with my decision but now I have no regrets.

Start at Holmes Rd where most of the employees aren’t even reporting to work. You know they’re not doing any work from home. Who can sales be calling on, most companies aren’t allowing visitors yet. What are the admins working on, theres no purchasing or invoicing being done. When they do report to work anyways, their Managers are clueless. At least here in Navasota, nobody bothers us.

Our HSE guy told us this morning that none of the facilities he’s visiting are doing anything.

@2nax sadly Brandt might not make the cut over the next several quarters. They are actively looking to sell it off and salvage whatever they can. It does have an established presence in the oil patch, however it has been so poorly managed for so many years. There’s no way that they can dig out of this hole.

I agree the Cellar Tech has much promise and can be a strong product line... if they quickly move it out from under WellSite management.

Some groups in Wellsite Services have a chance at surviving. Brandt has an established name and Cellar Tech is a new offering that seems to have potential. Past that everyone else is in a pretty flooded market and not competitive.

Tuboscope is heavily stacked with VPs and Managers. They need to cut some of these VPs. Make some better consolidation decisions.

@1aqm+15t7pZGL You are still wet behind the ears boy.
We has gas wars in the 60's and In the 70's we rationed gas, you could only buy on certain days depending on your license number. Look at the downturn that started in 1980 ($125 per barrel) to 1998 ($18 a barrel). A lot of jobs were lost and a lot young boys cried like you are doing today. 2014 isn't nowhere as bad (yet). So yes you do look at historical data and you go from there. Grow up boy and learn to listen.

Im not the poster who’s been in the industry since the 70’s.

I’m also not defending or speaking for anyone else.

But I would say to anyone who would insult someone calling them “an old bag of wrinkles” just for giving his perspective, is shallow.

He didn’t say he was laid off, and if he was he’s keeping his cool about it.

It’s still cyclical, just new and different disruptions!

In the 70’s, remember we were running out of oil.

Now there is more (and cheaper) than we ever imagined.

Advances in drilling and production stimulation have increased supply.

Efficiencies are driving demand reductions while you made a good point about remote work.

I don’t know about other O&G manufacturing and service companies, but NOV is like working remote even at the office.

Very few managers know what their employees are doing, people are doing their social media thing, no one gets reviewed for good accomplishments or poor performance due to incomplete or non-existent expectations.

The only time you’ll feel like you are really physically there, is when they call you into HR and lay you off.

Sorry about the rant, but in closing, one day you too, if you are fortunate, shall have wrinkles.

Your experiences and perspective may be valuable to others as well.

Let’s be kind to one another, be patient, if it isn’t intended to hurt you, just keep it to yourself, because we’re all on a time line and none of us is exempt.

Don't try to tell these old guys that something is different from the way things used to be or that it is helpful to know how to type. They don't like it when that happens.

This is a very different "downturn" than those of the past. Economic conditions are very different today than anything in the past. More energy efficient everything, COVID accelerating the work from home curve, reduced requirement on fossil fuels, This day was coming but COVID made it happen sooner. The fact is if there are X fewer wells being drilled or maintained, day rates are down drastically, costs are being cut everywhere and there are a few million extra feet of drill pipe out there, why bother with inspection and repair? There is nothing NOV management can do with that.

NOV will be around for years to come, but what will it look like and will it be NOV or some combination of another company.

This IS something new... you stubborn old bag of wrinkles. You can not compare this downturn to the past. It’s fundamentally different. Been hearing the old “it’s a cyclical industry” explanations for over 15 years. This particular downturn started in 2014 and with this pandemic and these price wars...you think it will come back just because Huh? Lol It’s going to be at least several more years and the industry will never be the same again. Adapt or get out.

I doubt NOV will fold, i have been with NOV for over 37 years and in the oil & gas industry since the 70's and have gone through downturns like this before many times. For you young guns, this is nothing new, yes, jobs will be lost but they will also return and once again we will see a surge of new oil field hands wanting to work the hours and make the money.

NOV is not alone in this downturn. My friends at Halliburton are hearing the same that you speak here. They are worried since they were furloughed and now hear will remain furloughed through the end of the year. Their work is slow, just like ours is. My connections at Schlumberger are saying the same thing, no work and fear of shutting down.

Good luck to all.

All of WellSite Services will be going away. Management should have better prepared business units five years ago, when the initial downturn happened. Instead they only worry about saving their salaries, and their favorite a** kissers... they will crash this into the ground if they can squeeze a bonus out of it somehow.
