Thread regarding IBM layoffs

H-1B is bad for diversity since over 70% of its recipients are from one country: India

"Foreign high-tech workers are taking American jobs and making Silicon Valley's diversity problem worse, Rev. Jesse Jackson said in a Fortune interview.

"There are Americans who can do that work, and H1B workers are cheaper and undercut wages," Jackson said, referring to the class of visas most often used by tech workers. He said the tech community had a problem letting new people in and giving them opportunities."

“Foreign visa programs devastate the thousands of students graduating from our phenomenal universities, hindering them as they seek to begin their professional careers.”

“At a time where the coronavirus has halted the hiring process for most companies, and most students have lost their summer internships or jobs, there is absolutely no reason to make positions available for those out of the country,” Klapatauskas said. “The country owes it to college students to protect the job market as students will be the ones to build and strengthen the U.S. economy down the road.”

After 35 years as an IT engineer, I will say one thing; H1B workers are presently NOT paid less than domestic workers. These are high paying jobs, which makes this even more of a tragedy for America's under-employed youth.
What we are misguided on, is what education these jobs actually require. Most entry-level support positions in project mgmt, applications, systems or network only require a HS or JR College education, some certification, a demonstrated attitude to learn, the ability to work well with others, and about 6-12 months of job training to be productive. The only reason workers are imported and H1B sponsored in the first place, it to indenture them to the firm for a set period time, and discourage job-hopping for more $$. Retaining tech workers was a major cause of CIO heartburn back in the early 2000s, which ultimately lead to this H1B mess. So now, many recruiting firms inflate the education requirements, and fill the positions with fake credentials from overseas to get the indentured worker they desire. American workers would gladly accept the same contract assignment terms if offered. We can no longer stand-by quietly as another so-called expert says : 'we need to import the best and brightest to fill these highly technical roles'. Enough is enough !

I posted here and elsewhere about the abuse of H1-B. Another source of abuse is the L1 visa, for intra-company transfers. I personally have known hundreds of people who came to the U.S. via these processes. The vast majority do not have exceptional skills; they simply are good talkers and found ways to connect with HR and/or management.

The U.S. does not need such high number of skilled immigrants. There is absolutely a lot of untapped talent right here, but companies do not want to pay more, allow for retraining and continuing education, which is a necessary part of the job. Companies want free access to all talent in the world, plus ability to place their divisions where it suits them to play less taxes, and the protection of the U.S. legal system, which is backed by the military power.

So, companies 'want their cake and eat it too'. It is up to the American workers to realize they've been had. We need to demand reform to this immigration system that is working well just for the companies, not the workers.

almost 50% of IBM's employees are in India, and the almost same percentage of the workforce in IBM USA is Indian. I assume the same true for other large tech companies such as Microsoft, Google.

While USA economy is going down gradually, India's economy has been booming, all credit goes to US politicians and people who let that happen to US. Indians are as smart in any way but instead, got opportunities and really took the advantage of intellectual capital of the US.

Don't blame H1B instead blame yourself and Govts who let these large corps move the jobs to the outside US
