Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Consulting

Consulting is a VERY bad place to be right now. Think about it, their entire business model of flying around, sitting in meetings and blah blah, living in fancy hotels, charging $800/hr in consulting fees, its all being hit right now. Due to Covid19, as well as many companies are tightening down and just wont be able to afford those multi million dollar contracts any longer. SO long IBM , Deloitte, PWC, Accenture etc !

@2xwq+15vZYbLG: The first poster said the right thing. If you do not like it, so be it.

We all know how much consultants like to work. You said "Finally, clients use consultants because they need their skill set, plain and simple". Really? Then, why would IBM lay off a cash cow? Economic conditions always matter in any decision, its not like Consultants do things which others cannot.

Very well said.
PARTY HAS A FINITE TIMELINE, IT HAS TO END. Consultants are like vultures anyway.

2xwq. Could you comment on the split of consulting resources within GBS as it relates to on shore vs off shore. There have been multiple posts saying the on shore consulting needs deep technical /consulting skills, but is back filled with a mountain of off shore perform resources. Do you see that as the business model IBM is asking you to play in? Secondly is AK’s stated strategy of moving toward all things Enterprise/cloud/Redhat viable, and or even being practiced?

Er, nope. Consulting costs just got cheaper for the Clients as there is no longer any need to pay travel and subsistence costs.

I've been in consulting with IBM for the last 4 years after 34 years in development, and the original poster has a very misguided view of the job. In the first place, most people I know don't enjoy travel and find it more of a burden, so I (like most of my colleagues) very much prefer doing my work from home, which I can do quite effectively Next, $800 an hour ? Ummm, no. Finally, clients use consultants because they need their skill set, plain and simple. Doesn't matter about the economic conditions (any more than any other job), travel restrictions, etc.: a client either needs the consulting resource, or they don'.t Period. And I'll just leave "blah blah" to stand for itself.

Easy hater. I think consultants play an important role for a lot of companies and provide value. Covid 19 has introduced many challenges in conducting business the same ways as the past but where there is a will there is a way!

I was really taken aback by the crude tone and ignorance in the post. Companies aren’t paying $800/hr for consultants since before 2007. GBS/GTS rates sure aren’t even a third of that. Services is 2/3 of the headcount and revenue of IBM and prop up the bloated and failing product orgs. Why on earth would you be actively rooting for their demise?

Covid didn't stop countless weeks of violent protesters why would it stop consultants?

Yes but the pandemic is accelerating digital transformation like never before. So this could mean a change in “power” from the big consulting players to lower cost providers.
