Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

be grateful not resentful

more and more posts here every day of people complaining about things that are no different than in any other company. yes, we have layoffs. imagine that, a company laying off people in the middle of a crisis to save money. it's unheard of, right?

you should be grateful you have a job in this economy not b–ch all the time about things not being perfect. they never were and never will be. grow up!

I went to a diversity conference awhile back and they asked the young employees what it was like working at Chevron. The response was that it felt like they were working for their parents. Ha.

If you were, or now a Chevron employee, agree more to be thankful than resentful. My experience in 30 plus years also is most folks with common sense - good work ethic, professional, treated others the way they wanted to be treated, tried to help people, etc.....typically did just fine. Most bitter and resentful usually had attitude or other issues personal to themselves holding them down. Also, have to realize, life isn't perfectly fair for seasons, but my observation was if you keep plugging away doing above, results would come around...

@jgu I had a similar experience at CVX. It took me two years of careful courting and evaluating companies in a low price environment to find both and open position and the right company culture. Keep your eyes and ears open and network always.

Thanks OP for spelling it out for the rest of us. Its about mediocrity people- wrap your head around that. Stay good enough to keep fooling shareholders. All the nonsense about the Chevron Way, powered by Human Energy, We Lead, is just image not substance. Lots of companies take 14 billion impairments (Enron for example), achieve project cost overruns in excess of 50 billion. I mean we aren't under-performing much worse than our under-performing competitors. Be happy with a sh*t sandwich. It beats starving right? After awhile you won't even notice. Its not Chevron's fault that you got recruited out of university and actually believed all that branding nonsense. Stop being so selfish and deluding yourself into thinking there actually is a better way to execute strategy profitably.

@smu. It appears you are resentful. You may be delightfully surprised to learn that a discussion with an EAP professional and utilizing the suggested resources might turn that resentment to an attitude of gratitude. Do yourself a favor and call them.

I don’t disagree chevron is generally a good place to work, but what pisses me off is when you see Supervisors playing favoritism to certain employees. Bumping up their psg’s and patting them on their back when I did all their work. I got no recognition for it either. When you point it out to them they act like they don’t know what your talking about.

I’ve been here 10 years, busted my a–. and even moved my whole family across the country for them. I can’t go into all my issue on this dumb site, but their valid.

I’ve lived through 3 ROMs.... this time around all I want is the EOI. Heck, it it wasn’t for EOI, I would have left voluntarily earlier this year.

I believe a lot of people are complaining as they came to chevron (who pays less then others) for job security and stability through downturns like this. Well here we are in a downturn and we are laying off. Remember we had a lay-off about three years ago after that lay-off they started hiring people and growing groups. Now we are in the same boat. That problem is not the downturn the problem is stop freakin hiring all these people in a good cycle when your going to have to lay them off in a down cycle. If you need bodies for the good times hire contractors so that they know there place. They that said I am not saying anything bad about contractors it’s just the facts they have a less stable job then an employee but they also get paid more for the less stability. Anyways. I believe this is the frustrations that you see.

Well said, OP. Thank you for reminding all of us to be grateful that we have jobs with Chevron, especially during these unprecedented times where many are loosing theirs. A lot of us tend to forget that Chevron is a good company to work at; a company that pays very well and offers great benefits. If that was not the case, it would not have one of the lowest attrition rates in the business.

I’ve been with the company for over 25 years (by choice, mind you); and over the years, I’ve seen a lot of people leave the company for greener pastures elsewhere, only to subsequently and regretfully discover that they under appreciated something specific the company offered. Some miscalculated the total pay package (base pay + CIP+ 401K match + and a pension to boot, something a few companies offer); while others under valued the company’s safety culture (e.g. office ergonomics); and still others under appreciated the company’s commitment to teamwork, etc, etc.

By no means am I trying to portrait Chevron a perfect company; it is not a. But generally speaking, Chevron is a good company that is well managed and one that truly cares about its people. And for that, I am grateful.
