Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Engineers and Technicians should unionize

Nothing worse when a huge corporation takes advantage of a short term downturn to shed older workers. Folks in their mid to late 50's are particularly vulnerable to not find work, too young to retire. Yep, they made sure they cut enough 20 something's to fit the curve...but seniority in many job industries are there for a reason. Public sector jobs have far exceeded any perceived private sector advantages, no pension or job security are the norm. Hold them accountable to take care of employees through a union contract.

Unions are worthless. They won’t protect you from a lay-off or out sourcing the work off shore. However like corporate execs their upper management will make sure they get rich off the backs of hard working people.

It wouldn't pass. I worked for a division of United Technologies when they were trying to form a union for the engineers a couple of decades ago. It failed miserably when it came up for a vote.

"Engineers need to take a stand before we're converted from respected professionals into anonymous human capital stock."

I think you are few decades too late on this one.

Couldn't agree more, especially when corporations are increasingly turning to contract engineers with no job security and bare-bones benefits and doling out "permanent" employment as a reward. Engineers need to take a stand before we're converted from respected professionals into anonymous human capital stock. And the only way we stand a chance of doing that in the current environment is with a union.

Around our site (sorry), talk of unions was very closely monitored by managers. It came up twice with plenty of panic on the management side. It would be fun to salt the system with union chatter just to put some heat under them.

You think you're seeing a lot of transitions now? Just unionize and see how fast they get out of town . I lived it! They HATE unions snd was always a factor on if they moved a shop or not.

Which is better corrupt for the CEO, or the employees for once? Look at the pay gap that keeps getting worse. You think I give two sh–s about a couple lazy b–tardz making good money when I am too? He77, there’s already enough lazy b–tardz in a non-union that make great money. I know plenty of people in unions and they are extremely happy paying dues since they are making the $ they deserve. Problem is there are too many scared employees to form unions anymore, but during these times maybe people should wake the he77 up. You greedy fools reading this know who you are and should be ashamed. This selfish attitude about pumping up stocks instead of taking care of your employees is what will ruin our economy and country.

agreed, we should unionize.

i also agree that unions are often badly organized.

if we can have a union that protects the worker but it's not corrupt, that'd be great

Union is worse than corporation. It protects weak and lazy workers. Union bosses are also only care about themselves not the union members. Honeywell has successfully negotiated many union contracts and took away many benefits from Union members. What did Union bosses do? Nothing!! They just let Honeywell won the negotiations and play dumb in front of their members. Do Not give your money to Union bosses and put your fate in other people's hand. Union is not the solutions.
