Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Losing all motivation

I'm not sure what's worse. All the layoffs, the hope after every new scandal that the work environment is going to improve just for it to slide back and become even more toxic than before a few weeks later, the horrible managers, the office politics that reward sycophants and a—kissers...

How are people finding ANY motivation to do any work? Do more than a bare minimum?

Yep. I noticed a change during the Parker era - especially toward the end when seeing Phil around campus was a rare sight. Parker was okay, a Nike lifer, but lacked the brashness of Phil. Seemed like Nike found themselves behind the times and it was too little, too late, when it came time to catch up. I feel like a lot of the direct to consumer stuff should've been happening at least a decade sooner. I don't know much about Donahoe, but he strikes me as your typical bean-counter CEO who's going to focus more on Wall St. than taking bold risks.

Phil cared for Nike, so Nike did well.

Current execs care about current execs only, so current execs are doing well.

I started at Nike the last year where it really felt like a college campus - especially during Summer where they made up for sr. leadership being MIA by making every week a party in some way for us regular employees. What's funny is that it's not like Nike is broke or anything. There's enough money they could totally make this easier for the plebes during this sh– show.

I guess it's not surprising that one good year was the last time Phil could be seen regularly walking around campus. I think the current leadership could learn some lessons from him on how you create a healthy, fun, and inspiring company culture from him.

The uncertainty that comes with greatness? Seriously? I don't want the uncertainty that comes with living in a van down by the river. Many of us are holding on by a thread. The idea of no job, no home, no insurance, no food for our families, a deadly pandemic raging, racism, xenophobia and fascism on the rise - it is all absolutely terrifying. And if one more person suggests looking for work elsewhere? Oh hey thanks I didn't think of that. I can string together three gigs to "find my happiness": grocery deliverer, Uber driver, and let's see what other exciting opportunities are available - morgue cleaner?

Great things can be done by people but they have to get out of their comfort zone and most don't want that. They don't want the uncertainty that comes because greatness so they continue working as drones, materialism leaves people unfulfilled and unhappy quickly, and come up with excuses not to go elsewhere. For a company that had unleash potential as a maxim, overwhelming this isn't happening, people stay for the paycheck while some who can't bring themselves to quit pray for getting laid off to collect unemployment and severance so they can finally be pushed to find happiness elsewhere
