Somethings fishy..............................
Does anyone other than myself find it "fishy" that EM has suddenly changed a ranking system that has been in place for years. Sounds like they're setting up a LAYOFF without actually calling it what it is ! Why not just be transparent about it like... — read more

To me all seems very fishy. Yes, they increased their quote to put more people in the PIP program ~8% or even ~10%. They set up the review with the employee and all they do is tell all the negative they can think about, management is not acknowledging any positive feedback, then they tell you that for poor performance they need to let you go and they offer you 3 options, Early Retirement, PIP (which management is encouraging to don’t take because “statistically “ there is no success on it) ; or Sign a paper saying they employee won’t sue them, take 3 months paid and in exchange employee won’t be able to apply in the future to any job under Exxon neither any affiliate or sister company, and on top of it, you agree to don’t sue them (btw, managers are encouraging to sign for this last one).
Does anyone know if anyone signing a document like this In Houston, TX (basically accepting is for poor performance - which most cases is not truth) will put a person in the situation to don’t be able to apply for unemployment if this person doesn’t find a job within the 3 months paid by Xom? I heard someone saying that they make you sign that document so they don’t pay unemployment as this would be a performance case. Again, we all know Exxon don’t do Massive lay-offs.. why?.. instead they are making people resign and say is employee’s merely fault. .. Comments.? Help please in understanding the unemployment piece in Houston TX

No - there WAS a change made to the ranking system “buckets” (supposedly to save time discussing those in the “good” to “excellent” categories ..... BUT they made another change JUST before the ranking meetings to increase the size of the lowest (PIP) group in the “Needs Improvement” bucket. My boss told us the PIP group increased from 3% to a MINIMUM of 8%. This was clearly in preparation for forcing people out the door.

So - it IS a lay-off, but it the sneakiest way. They can say that they got rid of low performers and the rest were early retirements and voluntary separations (the type where there’s a gun to your head). They also get away with giving people much less in severance payments.

However, if the OP was only 1 day ago, the process started 2 weeks earlier.

I don’t think Exxon was in on the COVID-19 spread but they did do an extremely poor job of planning. They had too many investments that were producing no money, overspent on plants they were repairing to divest, and also had too much debt and were riding on credit when the market plummeted due to the oil war between Russia and Saudia Arabia.

The primary reason for this lay-off is Exxon being a “One Trick Pony” and hedging it’s monies in nothing but petroleum manufacturing while also divesting from other forms of energy and manufacturing.

The secondary reason is they hired experienced people (from outside of ExxonMobil, not recruited from college) but due to the ExxonMobil corporate culture they were unable to adjust to the accountability, learning curve, and acceptance of other work place cultures that came with these people.

Lastly, they did a lay-off with only the supervisory input based on the financials of the employees and relationships of the employees amongst other management (in other words, who do they know and who will I piss off?).

Nothing to do with the conspiracy of COVID-19.

The change in how EM was doing the ranking predated covid-19. Unless you are some conspiracy theorist that know exxonmobil knew about the virus and planned for this knowing all this would happen...
