Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

“No Future Employment”

I was pretty surprised along with others I showed the “Waiver and Release” documents to to read that there was a clause saying “I will not apply to for future employment with XOM”. I’m glad to know that Exxonmobil thinks of us more like a condom and when they are done using us they toss us in the trash for good and buy the next one.

Not To Troll. You will one day meat the same faith. If you drink too much cool-aid you start to believe it overtime. If you stay one day you will be a low performer out of no where

The amount of people that believe that a large corporation means job security is astounding. There are too many any this company that are too comfortable with there situation and need to be let go. Hopefully the PIP program helps them along.

This is not a layoff. This is "for cause" termination of "at will" employees. "At will" employees can be fired for any reason. Also, ALL of XOM management is "at Will" so there are many high level people being forced out. If they go quietly they keep their RSU/EBU, if not they lose them. The 8% PIP is low by historical standards.

@asdf everyone PIP'D that I have know and has been let go has been a poor performer. I'm sorry that someone's life has been impacted because of this, but better to come to the realization that you you just don't compare to others and move on.

I see lots of people suffering here. People being told out of the blue told they are poor performers and are being laid off/terminated.
I see a few people trolling this site insinuating these folks are worthless and should have known it or expected it. SHAME ON YOU!
The new hires tell the story. At Exxon, it’s all about who you know and loves you. Every time there’s a layoff, new hires take the brunt because they don’t have enough or strong enough supervisor friends to stick up for them.

To be honest, the way they do the ranking makes me feel future there is dire. They basically rank groups of CLs across the whole site and call this “performance base”. How can you rank a senior process engineer with a senior business analysis? It s all politics-biases. If your supervisor is more aggressive than the other, then you will survive. No need to mention if you have a higher level sponsor. If you don’t have both, then you are simply waiting for slaughter. It s just matter of time. But, when you get to late 40-late 50, you are simply dead. In addition, whatever you learn from the previous roles are too shallow and you end up with no expertise to work for somewhere else.

ExxonMobil has been a dream company to work for, and young, bright, and talented professionals joined it after declining several other major companies' offers within the last year or two. One of the assurance given to young professionals was the job stability.

We all understand downward business pressures and the need to layoff as the ExxonMobil's rivals are doing with grace, transparency, and honesty. Within the last couple of years, something happened that completely belies everything that ExxonMobil stood for throughout its history. Lies and deception to their shareholders and public, and it is shattering the pride, confidence and lives of the Countries' best young talents.

WITHOUT ANY PRIOR COMMUNICATION AND IMPROVEMENT PLAN WHATSOEVER, the young and highly talended professionals from top ranked institutions in the Country are called by the managers SUDDENLY, and explained that while you are technically very sound, your presentation style needs improvement. THE SAME DAY OF THIS VERY FIRST MEETING OF THIS NATURE, the bright professionals are laid off with one week's notice . This has happened in their first or second year in jobs! Even if true (1 in 100 chance because these professionlas wont graduate from iv league schools and do not receive multiple job offers if they have this weakness), what has ExxonMobil done to train and nurture the talents they hired? Recruit and destroy them and their careers by saying they are weak?

The managers and CEO are weak because they lied by laying off in the guise of performance, and they havent done anything to even inform these best and the bightests, leave alone providing the improvement plans. This needs to be investigated immediately.

Lawyer talk. All companies have this clause. It’s not personal. Just remember we are people and people want the company they love to love them back. This is more so at Exxon then other companies I have worked at. The company brainwashing is this here. You will survive outside of this place you will be better off in the long run

@1cjt wow.. You must be terrible to be locked out of Exxon, as a new hire. Suggest you do some reflections..

Speaking as a new hire, I want to expand on this just a bit, for people who might be confused as to why this language hurts so much. No matter what I do, no matter what advanced degree I get, no matter what new skills I obtain or what new experience I get, I will never be considered good enough to return to ExxonMobil. This is the end for me. I won't sit at my desk again, I won't drive through one of the security gates, nor will I eat overpriced and subpar food at one of our cafeterias. This door isn't just closing; it's also locking while the key is thrown away. It's not just a value judgment on us now; it's a value judgment on everything we could possibly grow to be. There's no other way to slice it. It s—s, and it's a hard hit to the ego.

So if you’re being let go why would they ever want you to come back? I fail to see why this is odd language.

This CEO is a lying sack of sh–. They are forcing people out who have 20 years with the company who are disabled, but not retirement eligible. These employees will lose their medical insurance ASAP, will not be able to draw their pension for years, and likely will not be employable because disabled. They are breaking the law and they figure they can get away with it because the economy is tanking. It was in the plans since April and the CEO says in May no layoffs. F—ing liar. And yet his compensation and other executive compensation did not decrease. I feel sorry for the loyal, hard working employees who are getting tagged for the botton 8% without any clue in advance.

This seems like a slow degradation into a toxic culture. It is clear that Oil and Gas companies need to make some tough decisions, but it is always better to be upfront and clear about everything not use sneaky measures. If someone digs deeper, he/she may find that the many of surviving (even heavily rewarded) employees who are making the decision to out others in PIP are the reason for the increasing toxicity and companies rapid decline.
Sad!

That is quite strange considering XOM operates in remote or small town areas where the qualified workforce Is limited. Other companies of similar size that I worked at definitely hired the same folks again.

Its a job, that's how companies operate. They don't owe you anything. Exxon engineers were paid above market rates and competitive salaries. Don't be greedy.

If this happened to someone why would they even consider re-applying in the first place?
