How do I get out of “recommended” PTO

I want to save up PTO in case of LR but my boss keeps pressuring me to take the “recommended” PTO. Any way to get out of it?

240 hours for less than 5 years of service and 280 hours for more than 5 years of service.

what's the max amount of pto are you allowed to accumulate before it stops accruing?

Depends on the region and years of service.

In the U.S., employees with less than 5 years of service the max amount of PTO that can be accrued is 220 hrs and (I think) you earn 20 days per year. After 220 hrs are accrued, you stop accruing your 6.15 hours per pay period (20 days times 8 hrs/day divided by 26 pay periods per year). After 5 years of service, it bumps up, but I didn't get past 5 years of service so I don't know the details.

My first Cisco employee tenure, I thought we could roll over 220 hours into the next year, so I'd planned my PTO accrual such that after I took 2 weeks off in Dec (the 1 week mandatory year-end shutdown plus an additional week for family reunion that always takes place before Christmas, not after) I'd still have 220 hours.

My manager never bothered to warn me to start taking my PTO and suddenly I stopped accruing PTO hours because I'd hit 220 around July/Aug. At that point, I had to start taking 1 day (8 hrs) per pay period to offset the 6.15 hrs I was accruing and my manager got p-ss-d off at me for lack of planning. He didn't like it when I told him on the contrary, I had "planned" my PTO very carefully but my plans were based on incorrect facts because he didn't let me take the new hire orientation/mentoring when I converted from red to blue badge because "I'd been there so long I didn't need to go to orientation-someone on the team could show me how to request time off".

Luckily, when I did get LR'd I had a balance of 200+ hours, and once Cisco notified me of my LR they paid me a lump sum of 220 hrs PTO because of what I would accrue between the time I was notified and the time my employment ended.

What I do is not go to the system where you fill in the PTO and I do not fill in the recommended PTO. Works well. It would seem that taking PTO before October 7th is a terrible idea.

Just tell them you have too much on your plate to take PTO right now - even if all that is on your plate is the fear of LRs, it's still too much on your plate to take PTO.

sadly hr at cisco fails employees - managers are not expected to do their job as people managers. little training and no formal performance process. often managers dont know their leaders have agendas.

you will loose pto if you have maxed out.
if that is the case your manager is helping you.
else you cannot be mandated to take it.

There is no such thing as "recommended PTO". Unless you have accrued the max allowed and stop accruing pto, I would save all of it for when you get the LR. Your manager can't make you take it.

I believe there are some MAJOR legal issues with forcing people to take PTO. I would ask your manager why the requirement exists.
