Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Millennials are screwed

“Most workers are counting on Social Security as a meaningful source of income in retirement, the system’s trust fund will deplete its reserves and will only pay part of its old age and disability fund obligations beginning in 20 years, according to recent Social Security figures.

Current funding shows that Social Security is fully funded until 2034, and after that it is about three-quarters financed,
for someone working 30 years the average Soc Security & medicare out of packet payroll deductions contributions are 152,000 USD and your employers paying about the same amount.

by 3034 no millennial will be able to collect.. that is pretty sad, as the government will appropriate those contributions.

Your gift to uncle Sam.

Yep, the greedy boomers have screwed us every way they can. They have shut down the world economy so they can live off government entitlements for another 10 years. The heck with the rest of us who have mortgages to pay and kids to raise. They are the worst generation to ever exist!!

Eliminate the 137,700.00 cap on earnings and Social Security becomes fully funded for decades.

My crystal ball says that immigration reform will eventually bring millions of workers from Mexico into some sort of legal status so they can be saddled with paying into the SS fund to keep it afloat longer.

SS is a Ponzi scheme. I wish we could do away with it and let me invest by hat 6.2% on my own.

I suspect that rather than end SS they reduce the percentage of your salary that SS replaces. Mine is 33% and I would imagine a lower replacement rate and means testing. Increasing the payroll tax doesn’t seem to have any support currently.

I am a Gen X'er. I am 50. I am not counting on SS. It's actually my age group that will be right at that age around 2034.

I have long advocated for the government to allow folks to "opt out" of SS, especially younger folks. Anyone with a brain in their head can look at the numbers and see what a horrible investment it is, even if it did remain solvent, which it won't.

If you allowed folks to opt out and invest money on their own, there should would be a lot more people retiring with some dignity and a whole lot more money.

For folks 50 or older (like me), they should offer a "buy out", come up with a number for me to walk away, similar to a pension buy out.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of this will happen. This is a political nightmare issue, in that any politician that brings up the obvious need for SS reform gets painted as a whack job that wants to throw Granny off the cliff and take her SS. As a result, most don't want to touch it.

What is probably going to end up happening is means testing. They will end up looking at all of your assets and determining who gets how much (or any) SS funds based on how "rich" you are. So basically if you have worked hard your entire life and paid into that system, and also built up a retirement nest egg...you're probably going to get screwed.
