Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

IT Layoffs - Please Read

I did this once before and I got hammered in the comments.

I am a longtime IT Manager. I’ve done well. Verizon and all the cellular companies before Verizon helped me achieve a lot of personal goals. I have no complaints. If it ends for me this year, it ends.

I’m writing this for the IT employees that I care about. I’ve built up relationships with a lot of you. I genuinely care about the people I work with. I knew that those employees that stayed after the VSP would be safe for a year. In addition to recovering from VSP, we had various third-party folks to deal with. As you all know, the last fourteen months have been a challenge.

The post VSP year has come and gone. COVID has actually changed a number of plans. Call Center, Retail, HBA, and others have had to adjust. IT will need to adjust as well.

For EUS/Desktop Support and other IT departments, please do a few things. If you have the opportunity to take a training class, do it! If you have the opportunity to learn a new IT skill, do it! Protect yourselves. Gather every new skill that you can. Changes are coming. Layoffs are coming. At the very least, acquire something new to add to the resume. If you were recently moved to a new manager, update your resume and LinkedIn profile.

Again, protect yourselves. Start training yourselves now. If you are not on the list, then your current manager will be happy you are looking to the future with Verizon. If you are going to be let go, then at the very least, you have improved your IT knowledge. Begin now. Do not wait. Do not procrastinate. Do what you can to help the person in the mirror.

I’ve given all the information I can. I don’t want to give myself up. Like I said earlier, I care about my employees and the people I work with. It hurts to watch someone doing work for me when I already know that their time is short. It is brutal. It is beyond painful. I know of one manager that broke down crying after a call discussing what is coming.

If you are an IT employee, don’t turn the comment section into the YouTube comment board. This isn’t about calling someone you don’t know names. This isn’t about some insecure weak need to troll others. This isn’t about Infosys, HCL, outsourced centers, politics, or anything else other than someone that cares about fellow employees. I want you to start planning now. Do what you can to make the transition as easy as possible.

I’ll post this on both boards. Sorry about the double post. I'm not sure why that happened.

Sorry, yes, should have been more specific. We were the Help Desk and we were a total cash cow supporting a wide variety of clients for money until leadership changed hands and we dumped them, becoming the classic support department that was a drain on the bottom dollar, hence the entire department virtually being sent offshore.

As a former ITHD employee of several years, this is very kind of you to post this. We once had 200+ talented technicians keeping Verizon and several (profitable) commercial clients up and running and loved every second of it. Most of the managers, and if you're still around you're one of the good ones, did a good job encouraging and praising hard work while still treating us as people. You're absolutely right about getting certs and pumping up that resume before the inevitable.

Of course eventually our 200 dropped to 100 then 50 then 30 and then virtually 0 as more and more of our daily duties were sent to the India call centers. Such is life, gotta keep that stock price high. It wasn't until I grabbed some certs and went back for my master's that I was able to land a job with any level of benefits and stability in this crazy 2020 economy.

Here we go again. The staff reduction distraction season is now in full force and will remain in place through December. Good luck.

I encouraged my folks to learn, gain certifications, and implement new cloud skills a few years ago. Most saw the writing on the wall, volunteered for the VSP, got a sizable golden parachute, and are doing very well.

"Corp systems for the mess on fin transformation"

Finance transformation, what a joke! They give you no time to learn the new tools, and don't want to spend the money on licenses. I'm begging a real finance leader to take a look under the covers to see what a mess of outdated excel spreadsheets represent 99% of finance analysis.

On the infamous Monday morning 8 AM 9/24/2018 Global IT CIO Update call where 1400 people were selected to be rebadged to Infosys, Shankar specifically mentioned they were looking at EUS for additional rebadge opportunities. Two years later the OP gives the heads up "For EUS/Desktop Support and other IT departments, please do a few things." Heed the OP advice.

Well stated. As a f(VZ) mgr on the other side now I couldn’t agree more. It applies to all, really. Also don’t be afraid to come out of pocket to earn a certification. It is reinvesting in yourself.
