Realize that the Social Contract has been broken in this country. Once you hit 50 y/o, you become a liability, and will likely be tossed out. Manage your financial life with that sad reality in mind. I am very happy that I listened to my parents on this matter.

Over 50 and you end up doing project management work, vendor management, contractor management... You end up outside technology as a ton of cheaper and younger people are hungry to do that. So you just float up and out. It's like the way of nature. Very hard to buck that trend.
