Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

In a time of racial and social injustice, it's ironic we are segregated by color at cisco

Red vs. Blue.

By the way, Randstand employees at Cisco were furloughed for 3 days. TEKsystems reduced their rate to prevent this from happening. This type of activity may affect other staffing companies as well, but I don't have any insight other than that.

I imagine that Cisco came back to both staffing companies and said "hey, we can't do your asking price any more, but we can do X". TEKsystems agreed. Randstad did not, and instead decided to do the furlough.

Before you write that long response please consider:

  • I think Layoff.com administrators delete posts dealing with religion, race and se x
  • I think they also ban IP addresses

I get that racial and social injustice exist. But sometimes we can carry something too far. Opposites are too easily used for contrasts. Wet and dry, right and wrong, good and bad, day and night or light and dark. Light and dark become white and black. Yin and yang.

Just because light (white) is in the open, visible & transparent, i.e. good and dark (black) is obscured, hidden or secret, i.e. bad doesn't mean that white people are good and black people are bad. That's taking things too far. Symbolism is not meant to be literal.

And what about green meaning go/good and red meaning stop/bad? Do we have to stop using colors to differentiate everything because we'll offend colored people? Everyone's skin has color and is different. One is no better or worse than another. It's how each person acts that determine their goodness or badness.

Get off the red vs. blue. If Cisco removed the colored border around the picture, they could use portrait and landscape oriented badges like underage/over-21 driver's licenses to differentiate vendors from employees, but I'm sure someone would complain about that. Using triangles or circles/ovals isn't useful as it reduces the amount of space to put their photo in.

The real question is whether or not TEKsystems passed that reduced rate down to their employees (salaried or hourly) to keep their profit levels.

Seems to me that Randstad cost themselves money. They didn't get paid for those 3 days, and didn't have to pay their employees for those 3 days. TEKsystems at least got some revenue for those 3 days. The pessimist in me says they passed it down to their employees and screwed them.

I was at a credit card company who set their billing rates every year in June through a silent bidding process by all the suppliers and it became effective in July for the following 12 months. If you wanted to be a prime vendor, you had to be in the cheapest 5 suppliers. Everyone else had to go through the primes and would lose even more money, so big companies were incentivised to have the lowest bill rates. I had started a 12 month contract at X $'s per hour and my vendor cut their rates by $5/hr to maintain their prime supplier status and tried to cut my pay by $5. I was offered a role for 12 months at X $'s per hour and I threatened to quit over the sudden pay reduction. I was lucky in that they ate the reduction for 9 months and then tried to force the new pay rate on me when it was time to renew, but by that time I'd found a new job.

if you dont like it...get an FTE position, its a free country.

And companies do the majority of their hiring via contractor conversions. The last time I was hired as an FTE directly was over 15 years ago. However, I've been converted to an employee at over 2/3 of the roles I started as a contractor.

It's a simple numbers game. Red badges are easier to cut than blue, plus the legality of it is likely easier to deal with.

No one mentioned "You" specifically.

Here's a clue. It is a business. Deal with it.

So do you want badges with symbols then instead of colors.

Triangle is new regular employee.

Rectangle is new contractor.

Would that make you happy?

You just wait until they get done with this anti-racism training. You’ll never look at your colleagues the same again. You will be trained to see everybody in your “team” through the lens of identity and asymmetric power dynamics. Beats me how this is supposed to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration?

I never stated I was a red badge. Stop making assumptions.

Being a red badge can end at any time. Harsh statement but reality. Consulting allows you to go from job to job.

My respectful vote is stop trying to get converted. If it is meant to be it would happen. If it doesn't, move on if not happy.

Cisco is like a marriage. If the other partner doesn't feel the same, it was never meant to be.

Cisco is also like a marriage in that you will probably get divorced after a decade or so.

At least if you are blue (aka formally committed), you get parting gifts and prizes. She gets to keep the PC though :)

I think the furlough is only for certain areas within cisco. No red badges from randstad were furloughed in my team.

Its the nature of Red badge employment. Red badges don't whine when their paycheck cashes. so they shouldn't whine when they are reminded that their employment is temporary. if you dont like it...get an FTE position, its a free country. STOP YOUR WHINING!

I notice these are American companies. The vendor I worked for was cut this year in multiple groups, in favor of 2 Indian vendors. Several years ago, many vendors were asked to cut their rate, my vendor did, CH Reynolds did not. 2 year ago, CH Reynolds was cut as a vendor. Ranstad will be gone next year, if you follow the trend.
